my sister who works for LDB told me about a burglary that happened at the Ocean Park liquor store in South Surrey over christmas one night ... guy smashed out a store window and then a locked glass case filled with expensive scotches ... retail value of the bottles was around $55K... the dude put it all into one of those green rolling city recycling bins (lol - dont know how he couldnt have broken some bottles) and ran away pushing it

so it sounds like mattola had a pretty great christmas

I found a few old bottles of booze, how do I find out if they are worth anything?
They are all probably 30 years old at least

FWIW:

Back in 1980, I was part of a demolition crew that tore down the UDL whiskey distillery in South Vancouver. We found a few hidden bottles of whiskey from the 1940's and it was perfectly fine. In fact, just a few years ago, I was drinking some 20+ year old whiskey that a friend of mine acquired when his grandpa died. Most of it was from a previously opened bottle. I wouldn't sweat it, to be honest.

Edit: Never mind; I just re-read what you actually posted. Damn, and I'm only on my second beer. :L

Search for an appraiser online, check their background and get references on them. You should also be able to use the info on the bottle to see if anyone's is selling or has sold anything similar. Or you can remember your old pal mattola, and game 7.. Just saying

Need some help from the Scotch drinkers. I have no idea what I am looking at when I get to this section of the liquo(u)r store, and am trying to find mon pere something nice. Our local establishment has these two in the price range I am looking at. Any experience or comments on either the specific vintage or the distillery in general?

Tasting Notes30-5-in-180-162x300.jpg for Highland Park 30:

Overall – This is a serene dram. Creamy, dreamy – so devoid of disturbance it is like peering into the depths of a swirling, many-colored marble, buffed smoother than glass.

Color – Dark reddish brown, held in the light it turns to cherry, as transparent as gemstones.

Nose – Brandy preserved fruit, and pungent sherry, giving way to heather, oak and butterscotch creme brulee, hints of milk chocolate and ancient peat.

Splash – Ridiculously devoid of heat, it is smooth as a palace floor.

Palate – Medium to full body, expansive and deep, with oak, citrus zest, sherry and a touch of salted green peat, all so well-married that “balanced” no longer holds any meaning.

Finish – mellow and effortless, with dry wine oak and floating chocolate toffee.

Highland Park 30 review - a serene dram. Sublime. One Man's Malt

Even if you're not a drinker, you should at least once experience opening a bottle of Highland Park in a small office and let the scents tickle your nose in a sea of awsomeness with overtones of fuck yeah and this is damn fine whisky. I did it with a bottle of 18 year old Highland Park and the memory will stick with me the rest of my life.

I can only imagine what the 30 year old is like.
