Do y'all like or dislike VT playing ODU? Will it help in recruiting the 757?

I'm not excited, but I'm fine with it. Don't think it'll help or hurt recruiting too much. There are some small pros and some small cons.

ODU is going to start pulling better recruits regardless of whether we play them. Every once in a while they'll pull a guy we want just like ECU or Temple or someone like that does today, but VT will still be the big boy that mostly gets what it wants (over ODU, I mean) unless they approach VT's level on the field. And I don't see that happening in the foreseeable future.

It looks like ODU is phasing in as ECU phases out. At least I hope that is the case. Regional opponents tend to be low cost but have enough local interest to sell out Lane Stadium. They're a good 3 spot on the OOC schedule, and a visit to the corner of Virginia that we love to recruit but never get to play. Still we should be trying to get at least something extra financially out of this 2-2 arrangement.

BLACKSBURG (hokiesports.com) - Virginia Tech Director of Athletics Jim Weaver and Purdue Director of Athletics Morgan Burke Thursday announced that the Hokies and Boilermakers have signed a contract to play a home-and-home football series beginning in 2015.

The contract will start with the 2015 game being played in West Lafayette, Ind., on Sept. 19, and the second year of the deal will take place in 2023 in Blacksburg, on Sept. 9. The Tech/East Carolina game in 2015, originally announced for Sept. 19, has been moved to Sept. 26 and remains in Greenville.

“This is another opportunity for Virginia Tech to play a Big Ten series and we’re looking forward to the games,” Weaver said.

The Hokies have played just three current members of the Big Ten in program history: Indiana, Michigan and Nebraska. The Hokies have never played Illinois, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue or Wisconsin, although dates with Ohio State (2014, 2015), Wisconsin (2019, 2020), Michigan (2020, 2021), Penn State (2022, 2023) and now Purdue are on the future schedule.

Tech has a 3-2 all-time on-field record vs. current Big Ten teams: Indiana (1-0), Nebraska (2-1), Michigan (0-1).

So we were this close to having another game against A&M and we settle for Purdue?!??! I guess it is better than some directional MAC schools. Wonder if this was in the works before or after the hiring of the new president.

I like it. Already was a tough OOC sched in 2015 with tOSU at home and ECU on the road. Now two true road games. And like French said, it's mostly about recruiting. Them midwest guys we're recruiting a lot harder can make a short trip to see a VT game

Meh. Not every game can be against the Ohio States of the world. It's a very winnable game against a team with some name recognition. If the return game every happens, they might be good by that point. Plus, it keeps that relationship going with B1G. I was expecting Maryland to take this spot, so this isn't much different.

Not bad. Better than Peay or Furman...that's for sure. Who knows, they might even have a decent team in a couple years.
