Agreed. I think I just value the expected increase that Nathan provides more than you (especially come playoff time). I also agree with DD that Rondon should be able to handle the set-up role. I don't know what to say about Coke. Hopefully one of the young guys step up in AAA or we are going to be stuck with him.

The moves that DD made sense except the Fister trade....The starting pitching is not better with Smyly and the BP is not better without Smyly......There are questions at some positions as far as offence goes, 3rd base, SS, Catcher, but every team has what ifs.......I remember some guys last year saying D is more important than offence at SS and catcher......If Alex has a year like last year and Dirks has a year like last year we have a problem, but if they have years like 2012 wow....If Nick C and Iggy can't hit major league pitching we have problems... they should be ready.... The D on this team is much better.....I guess most teams could do this with their players.....but I like where the Tigers are right now and would rather have the Tiger issues than most teams....

Pretty much what i said...benoit was great...nathan was better......rondon is a big IF.....

Nobody trusts coke...

Smyly is was better than krol...

Joba isnt as good as dotel....

And a bunch of the same garbage we had last year....

You still have to get the ball to the 9th inning....

Just not comfortable with rondon, joba, coke, krol, al al, and any other guy from AAA they bring up. Gonna be hard to win with speed and defense with a weak pen.....a good closer doesnt make a weak pen good....especially when your closer last yr did a great job.

At least we got rid of valverde....now.....how long before coke gets cut? Hes the next valverde with 9 tiger lives.

I trust Ol' Cokie............... To Suck! Rondon though, he looked good in the second half last year. More of what DD was planning on than the guy we saw in Lakeland or during his early season struggles. He should do well this year. Probably will have to be held back on account of an unnecessary FA signing. I might be alone on my opinion of Nathan. Not how I wanted to see the back end improved. I don't like the money and I don't like his age. I don't like it even more when Doug is gone for money, Prince is gone for money, Davis is here cuz of money. But we have an old dude at the backend for 10mil. Not how I wanted to see that go down. Oh well, the pen is better. Smyly in the rotation scares me most about the staff as a whole. Question mark in the rotation and leaves a whole where a Drew should be in the bully. Why in gods name are the Tigers talking to Ervin Santana?

Do you think Nathan's ability is going to fall off a cliff? I guess there is injury concern but I would hardly doubt his ability to perform. In the last 10 years there has only been one year (2011) that he had less than 35 saves. Since the IP are so low, the injury risk is mitigated. The closer role is more mental than physical and Nathan has proved capable. Rondon is definitely being groomed to be the closer but if he excels at the set-up role, I think most Tiger fans would be elated.

Dont get me wrong....nathan is HUGE.....but its about getting the ball to him

DD thought rondon could handle the closer last year too.....i would of rather he got that chance after next yr....this teams window is now....we didnt improve the pen at all......signing nathan gets offset by losing smyly, veras, and benoit.....while adding joba and krol...

Coke shouldnt even be here. Another valverde problem. Somewhere along the season he will keep messing up and FINALLY be let go...

Getting depressing watching our BP pieces sign elsewhere....veras going to be a closer....benoit back to a set up man.....gonna miss them 2 everytime the hutt comes in.

Thats what im saying burf....a team that went to 3 straight ALCS has toooooo many IFS.....

Were hoping avila and dirks can hit....hope iggy can hit above 250.....nicky C? You know how i feel about prospects...

Losing benoit, veras, and smyly will kill the BP.....nathan will be solid when he gets the chance. Porcello and smyly wont be pitching into the 8th inning alot.....so i look for the pen to blow quite a few games they start.

Nice post smitty.....rondon looked good at times....but i just dont trust him yet.....ONE more BP arm would of made me feel better. Yeah i dont get the way we spent after getting rid of people for money.

And please for gods sake dont get santana....next 2 yrs he will be bad as usual.

Its not Nathan, or his age, or his innings, or his injury history that gets me. I'm not a huge proponent of spending big money on a closer. To me, it's a much better move to improve the bullpen as a whole. Helping the team as a whole. Rather than spending Big Money on a guy who you hope to get to use. Just not my preferred way of going about improving the pitching. Im definitely not elated with the bullpen as a whole. The "other Ian" is my favorite pick up in the group, believe it or not.

I wonder if DD figured DTown had rode the Fister train long enough? No where for him to go but down? Cuz trading him to save money then giving a closer 3mil more and for some reason looking at ErvinS, at about double of Dougies salary seems pretty damn weird. If Dave feels like he needs another right handed starter whys he not talking to Garza?

I was just looking at the MLB Futures to win the WS to see what the bettors think of the offseason moves.

Dodgers are 5/1 with the Tigers and Nats 8/1

Tigers are 7/2 to win the pennant over the 9/2 BoSox with the Royals and Indians at 15/1

Although the odds are somewhat misleading because Vegas thinks the Tigers are shoe-ins to win the Central, I think it is safe to assume the Tigers haven't drastically hurt their chances with the offseason moves.

Scary to say but $10MM/yr isn't big money. Benoit got $7.5MM and I think the upgrade is worth it. I agree that the overall BP is not improved as far as the regular season goes, but in the playoffs you need a dominant closer. In the playoffs you shift on arm from your starting rotation and the schedule allows for other SP's topitch if necessary. I think the moves demonstrate that the Tigers feel they should still win the Central.

Also, I think Casey Crosby will eventually see time on the roster. His overall stats are somewhat misleading in that he has started games well but tends to get beat up in later innings. If he has a good spring he could head north with the team.

I agree they have hurt their chances but if you look at the talent compared to other teams in the central it is still not even close.

Detroit is just a different team. We lost x and gained y. I think as long as the pen is good Detroit wins the Central. Thats a lot of faith in Rondon and Joba.

I would feel more confident if they would have signed a couple guys like Crain and Thornton.

10mil for a guy that plays 65 innings or so, is big money to me. Four more Joba type signings and I wouldn't have to dread Crosby, or Coke or New Mexico.
