He does seem to struggle at understanding how to sign a top free agent.

And I have a sneaking suspicion Rendon will get tired of being there when they can't sign/attract any decent pitching without way overpaying like they did with him.

Winning what?
how about games? if it isn't important to you to win games why bother fielding a team? why not just put a sign on the gates saying "come back in 2021 or 2022 etc when we will be ready to compete because the games aren't important right now"

well you seem to. trade Minor, trade Lynn, hell trade any one who has value seems to be your mantra and who do you put out there in their place? why not trade Elvis and Gallo too?
I was happy to put this lineup out

C Chirinos/Trevino
1B Guzman
2B Solak
3B Rendon
SS Elvis
LF Calhoun
RF Gallo
CF Santana
DH Mazara

SP Lynn
SP Kluber
SP Gibson
SP Lyles
SP Burke, Allard, Palumbo, or FA

There would have been nothing wrong with this team. And we would have even more pieces for Minor, Choo and Odor, a couple of very good pieces for Minor and a decent one for each of the other two if we paid their salary down.

Tell me again, how I didn't even want to compete.

All of that was doable by a good GM.

Tell me your goal for number of games to win.

Why don't you put a sign up that says "I just want to be antagonistic and misrepresent everything someone says when they don't agree with me."

They didn't overpay for Rendon.

that would be me. I love my Rangers and I want to see them be competitive or at least decent on the field

I live an hour from Great American Ballpark they only time I go is if Texas is in town, last time I went Darvish hit his one and only HR which was a no doubter.

This year looks to be different in that the Reds are assembling a team that should be at least .500 and maybe better if they can fill a couple of holes. A big hole the last 2 years has been at 1st base, problem is unless Votto turns things around it will remain a hole until his huge contract expires. Which is the main problem with huge contracts they usually end up sucking and make it almost impossible to fix the problem...

as long as we put a team out there that is in every game and that I can enjoy watching numbers don't mean much to me. I would like to see us at least break even this coming year and maybe after a few more moves next off-season maybe 84 to 88 wins in 2021. you know competing.
what do you want this coming season?

we've had that problem with Choo's contract and now with Odor's but that happens you don't win every move but you can't let it stop you from trying to make your team better.
Moreno lives by that. he has made some bonehead moves over the years but it doesn't stop him from continuing to make such decisions in trying to make his team better

Almost all professional athletes are overpaid, the win now/at all costs mentality has caused that...
The logical conclusion to that argument is get out of the business.

I meant he wasn't overpaid according to market value, but I think you know that.

I spelled out what I wanted above. JD blew the chance to have that. That isn't my fault. The team I wanted would have won the 84-88 games that you want.

He has signed some big names which will attract some fans cause they want to watch those big names play or like shiny objects. But if the teams pitching ERA is still as bad as it was last year 5+ after the ASB the fans will start staying home again and spending all that money on 6 WAR will be for naught when it should have been spent on improving the BP.

Market value has been set by owners that way overspend but then again you know that.

You always try and make a team better but spending over the top is not the answer. Ask the Astros/Yankees. Bet it will not work with LAA either.

you and everyone else here knows that there is no way we will find trade partners for Choo and Odor who would even offer a sack of batting practice balls even if we offered to pay half or more of their contracts. and as decent as Minor has pitched I would not expect a couple good pieces for him. at best I would expect a couple of low-level prospects.
Rendon went to the Angels and Mazara went to the White Sox. what's your plan now?

I know you have to pay market value no matter how it got that way, if you want to win a WS eventually.

Be a defeatist if you want to, but a good GM could have unloaded Choo and Odor. What we would have gotten for them would not have been necessary to win 86 games this coming year and that is what you wanted.

You are purposely lowering Minor's value when it comes to trading him and then reinstating that value when it comes to his pitching for us.

Lol

I don't know if you are aiming that at me but i'm not pushing for us to ever attempt to spend over the top like the Astros and Yankees and Dodgers and the Red Sox have done but I am in favor of spending when it fills a need. Choo's $21M comes off the books after next season I think the $9M going to Fielder comes off after next season too. that clears $30M off our payroll.

I am through with plans because of our upper management. We are doomed to repeat our last two years in just a few years because of JD and ownership.

You asked what we would trade for Arenado earlier and I simply answered your question.

the offense and defense he has put on the field will offset some of the pitching problems but Moreno will not back off from trying to find pitching
