I am all right with this decision. Letang could have let up, but he decided not to, and he will have to pay the penalty for his decision.

However, I want consistency with this new discipline system. In my opinion, it is already inconsistent. I have counted two hits on Penguin skaters that have been targeted in the head, and there wasn't a thing done about either one of them.

It looks nice on the surface that the players are being protected, but I don't see consistency with it, and we are only in week two the season. You can bet this will only continue.

2,000!!! :D

One of those was on Matt Cooke though, which I think is allowed under the revised rule 48.

:D

Not only that, but Cookie got away with goaltender interference last night directly contributing to the Pens first goal last night.

Heck, Kerry Fraser agrees with me.

There's no doubt after the Penguins won the faceoff in the Jets end zone and just prior to a goal scored by Zbynek Michalek that Matt Cooke made deliberate and significant contact to Ondrej Pavelec while the Winnipeg goalie was within his crease and set to defend against the shot. A penalty for goalie interference under rule 69 should have been called on Matt Cooke whether a goal resulted or not.

Fraser: Did Matt Cooke interfere with Ondrej Pavelec?

Haha! I knew that was going to be pointed out :L In any case, as much as a dick Matt Cooke is, the player safety and subsequent discipline needs to be extended to all NHL players. Kunitz took an elbow to the head against the Oil from Smyth, and there wasn't anything done about that one, either.

Shanny is already inconsistent, and we've only gone two weeks into the season.

I would have liked to see Shanny put out a video about the Cooke hit, but I was OK with that one actually (and not just because it was Cooke). Specifically why was because Sarich already commits to the hit and Cooke moves at the last second when he pokes the puck past Sarich and cuts inside. I don't think it was a direct targeting of the head, hence OK, but I would have liked Shanny to address it at least.

Hadn't seen Smyth/Kunitz until I looked it up now based on your post. Yeah, I'm surprised that one didn't get a look.

I don't think it was, either. But, like the head-shot rule says, both inadvertent and deliberate hits to the head are subject to the discipline that goes with it after a review. In both of these instances, there was nothing more said, and that makes me wonder how this new discipline enforcement will work.

Yeah, sorry for my prior post being a bit unclear about the head not being the target related to the rule (read my own post again and it sounded like that's what I was trying to say).

What I meant was that because Cooke moved right before the hit, which resulted in the head being the primary point of contact that it was OK, not that it was OK just because the head wasn't specifically targeted.

Still would have liked a statement on it though.

This is just devastating to a team decimated at the moment. Argh. I can see why, but when you have 2 head-shots against your team and they don't even have meetings with the players to discuss it, that's a bit frustrating. I'm okay that neither got suspended, but to not even call them to discuss the issue is silly.

Hmmm....none on that one. I dunno, can't expect perfection in the disciplinary system.

shanahan also mentioned that he was recently fined for a similar infraction. i think that played a large part in the suspension

I think there the argument would be made that Henrik tuned his body. Shanaban did mention this in the Letang video that there was no distinct movement.

I do think this was an obvious board and could have hurt him regardless if he turned his back.

Ehhh on second look, it seemed he would hit numbers no matter what

Ok after hearing Shanahan's reason for the suspension I am okay with it. As long as he stays consistent it is fine.

Interesting take by Burmistrov on the play

"Its OK, I feel good," the 19-year-old, second-pro said. "I was a little bit shaky after... my head just hit the boards but its OK. I woke up this morning and everythings good."

Burmistrov said he might have been partially at fault for the way the play unfolded.

"Thats hockey," he said. "I think he did not do this on purpose. He came to me and I turned back and he maybe wanted to hit me in the shoulder and I just turned and it happened."
