I usually don’t tune in but did to hear him. Great speech. Here’s the end
The ESPYs are garbage. They gave an award to Bruce Jenner for being priveledged enough to get a sex change operation over a double amputee who competes in tough mudders, 5ks, 10ks, spartan races, etc. that’s complete bull shit. A buddy of mine lost his leg after slipping into an auger recently and they don’t even know if he’ll be able to walk on even ground again with prosthetics. Fuck that stupid award show.
All I see is espn profiting off of it.To each his own. I'm no particular fan of ESPN but this video goes way beyond any personal preference or bias. The core of this is a human being that's fighting for his life and trying to inspire others to never give up.
That's all I see anyway.

Understandable. And I wasn’t bringing up my buddy because of this, it was merely to point out that he ESPYs are about profit because Jenner was the hot story at the time. The double amputee had a much much rougher go of it and ESPN went with the more profitable approach. You can appreciate and support the warrior in Jim Kelly without watching that bull shit. Heck, there are millions of warriors with cancer that you can appreciate and support in person.Sorry to hear about your buddy's leg and I certainly get the profitability perspective. Still, I just see this isolated event at the ESPY's as a moment in time to appreciate a warrior and his fight to stay alive.

The only reason Jim Kelly won it was because he was most likely the hottest story at this time.
I never complained about Jim Kelly. Not once. I said ESPYs are shit for a lot of what you mentioned. And Jim Kelly most certainly is hot in the news. Ive heard of his oral cancer coming back from several sources. Who were the other nominees? Have you heard about them in the news multiple times?Jim Kelly isn't "a hot story at the time." I dont know that anyone has even talked about him in months.
And say what you will about ESPN, the Jimmy V foundation is any beyond reproach, and the time and money ESPN puts into it is way beyond any other TV station besides possibly whoever used to host Jerry Lewis' MDA telethon.
And maybe the only awards show speech of any show in history that might be as touching and inspiring to the original Jim Valvano speech at the first ESPY, was when Stuart Scott won the Jimmy V award and gave his speech shortly before he died. There are obviously other inspirational stories, and other people who have overcome obstacles, but ESPN and the Jimmy V award in particular have a long history with sports figures and cancer.
Attack ESPN all you want. From everything I see they're a pretty shitty company in a lot of aspects. Attack the ESPY awards in general if you'd like, I hate the way they've implemented what started as a novel concept. Even attack this particular ceremony if that's what you want. I turned it off after watch part because Danica was painful to watch and the stunts and whatever skits they had planned were beyond bad.
But complaining about Jim Kelly winning the Jimmy V award is ignorance turned up to 11.
