Let's remember, Twat "7.99 per month for the Athletic" Waffle is at the center of all this. He contacted the agent, asked his typical leading questions and got some very political answers. Then he spun it into a clickbait article on his tabloid rag with a ridiculously melodramatic opening:

If the Jackets say we want to give you 8 years, and Panarin says he's more comfortable with 3 to 5, he signs that day. Jackets obviously want to lock him up for max, but they want the kid in the organization. And the agent hinted as much, a short team deal would be done already. In order to avoid this very problem.


What I get is Panarin is gun shy about any long term deal, and he certainly doesn't want to talk about it now during the offseason. Who knows if he even wants to stay anywhere in North America for 8 years? Jackets have made no contract offer yet, and Panarin has made no demand yet. He was asked if he was talking contract and he said, in his version of English. that he wasn't interested at this time. If he was from Baltimore he might have said "Ain't nobody got time fo' dat shit". And Portzline started fucking that chicken, and handed his sloppy seconds off to Friedman who decided it meant that Jarmo was listening to trade offers. Which is Jarmo's job, to be fair.

1) Carter wasn't going to be happy anywhere after signing an 8 year deal and then getting shit on and back-stabbed by Philadelphia. There were maybe three places he could have gone and not been pissed right out of the gate. We were just the "lucky ones". If he went to Buffalo, the same thing happens. 2) I know Rick Nash's brother, he lives in town and is a skating coach here. Rick's parents live here in the summer. Rick and his wife live here. The team said they couldn't win in his prime and couldn't really afford his contract during a rebuild. They asked him to waive his NTC and he exercised his right to pick his destination (Not Edmonton, as was the first deal). That's it. He didn't ask to leave, he was asked. Panarin, an unrestricted free agent after the 2018-19 season, is not currently willing to negotiate a contract extension with the Blue Jackets. So, in this respect, the Sept. 13 deadline is meaningless.

Where it carries more weight — significantly more weight — is on the trade front, should the Blue Jackets opt to trade their best forward rather than risk losing him for nothing as a UFA next summer.

It is logical to assume the Blue Jackets will get a much larger return in trade for Panarin if he’s being traded to a team that knows it can sign him to a long-term contract. Otherwise, the acquiring team would also inherit the Blue Jackets’ current crisis.

The consensus around the NHL — speaking with GMs, management types, etc. — is that Panarin’s willingness to sign an extension with his new club would be the difference between a trade that provides the Blue Jackets an immediate roster impact and a trade that involves only future commodities, such as high-end prospects and early-round draft picks.

Kekalainen has said he expects Panarin to be with the Blue Jackets when the season starts, perhaps all the way to the NHL trade deadline and beyond.
