Per Bleacher Report, Voynov had his DV charges dropped, hope this paves the way for his return to the Kings!

It was a big step.
Hall of Famer Gary Bettman will be hard pressed to exclude him from playing with his conviction dismissed and the judge saying,” We believe Mr Voynov has well-earned the respect again of this court[and] has fulfilled each and every term of his condition “
Of course we still don’t know when he will come back and if the Kings will (re) sign or trade him.

As I have said all along post-jailtime, he has served his time for an offense plenty of NHLers have been guilty of with no suspension or consequences of any kind. Kings, be brave and do the right thing--bring him back, and let the man make a living and honor his contract. Would love to see #26 in Kings' uni on the ice.
Would also free up Muzzin or Martinez (or both) for trades for more offense. Would be huge.

Not to mention the Kings are a little thin on the right side after DD. Phaneuf isn't going anywhere, would have to be Martinez or Muzz in order to free up enough space.

Bedsides the PR issues, gotta figure Blake and Robo are grappling with the "what if something happens again" scenario. Then Voynov would be gone for good, and the Kings would have already traded another key defenseman.

This is pretty interesting. Tortorella is out of his mind in general, so even if he ever has a legit gripe, he has zero credibility (For me at least).

Tortorella rips J. Johnson for Blue Jackets slight

But we'll see how this all plays out. Jack Johnson signed for 5 years, and we'll see how that goes for the Pens.

Did some research and lots making sense why he got what he got: there is a stipulation that if he makes over $3.5 million per season more of his wages would be garnished against the BK he filed. Thus the 5 year/$16.25 million deal ($3.25 million per season), keeps it under that threshold.

I mentioned he wouldn't get this type of deal elsewhere unless a GM felt bad for him, and the GM that did is Jim Rutherford - the same GM who drafted him 3rd overall and held him in such high esteem. Johnson called in the favor card and got it.

This is a pity deal, but hey more power to him. They will regret signing this guy and he will be a buyout candidate in 2-3 years.

This is a great read:

Jack Johnson Scouting Report: Alarming news from the Columbus folks that know him best

The guy has arguably been the worst defender in the NHL for a decade, BJs fans pretty much laid it out there for them.

As for the rant, I think Tortorella was a bit out of line with the F bombs but Johnson created this mess. I'm glad however that both he and the GM want an explanation from Rutherford about what he said about the decision making in Columbus.

You can say things about your new franchise without saying anything negative about your old one; lots of ways to say that but he picks the one way to come across as a total jerk and pulled it off to a T even though I don't think he meant that.

I no longer think Johnson was confused or trusted his parents too much, he really is a dumbshit.

As Abraham Lincoln or Mark Twain said, it's better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than open it and remove all doubt.

I've never believed he wouldn't be back in the NHL, my doubt is that he would return to the Kings. That was also under the old regime however, and Blake is showing to be a player friendly GM from what I'm seeing so I wouldn't be surprised if he does come back in an LA uniform. It'll be a firestorm on the PR front, but he would solidify a defense that is already very good as is.

But I also wouldn't be surprised to see his rights traded for something decent because he fits the mold of what defender is coveted - good skater, offensive skills, right shot. The Kings own his rights until 6/30/19 so either one could happen.

Did some more research and his contract was terminated but because he is on the Kings' Voluntarily Retired list if he returned to the NHL before age 35 (like Kovalchuk just did), his last NHL team owns his rights for 1 year and then he becomes a UFA. He can be signed to whatever deal he agrees to right now with LA, his old 6 year/$25 million deal doesn't apply.

This is why Kovalchuk returned this summer, prior to age 35 (he turned 35 in April) if he returned NJ would have held his rights for 1 year. By waiting, they did not, he was a UFA and signed with LA.

Senators give teams permission to talk contract extension with Karlsson:

Report: Sens give teams permission to talk contract with Karlsson - Article - TSN

This opens the door to work out a trade with the team he agrees to sign with after this season, although the Senators did offer him an extension over the weekend. I haven't seen any details on what they offered, but I don't think it was the Doughty deal and Karlsson probably told them no thanks so the Sens opened up the talks with other teams and him.

Personally I wouldn't give him the Doughty deal, I don't think he is worth that type of money because he's a one trick pony.

Doughty thinks he and Karlsson deserve near the same. Or as he put it much more than PK.

I would argue against that, I think Karlsson is more between Burns (8 years/$64 million/$8 million AAV) and a little more than Subban (8 years/$72 million/$9 million AAV).

Similar statistics, both have won a Norris, both are offensive defenders that are suspect in their own end but Burns has become better at that in recent years. The thing Karlsson has over Burns is youth (33 vs 28, Burns was 31 when he signed his deal) so he should be paid a bit more over the long haul.

Don't get me wrong, Karlsson is a dynamic player who can add a ton of offense from the back end but he is a complete liability in his own end. We've gone over the details ad nauseam, the PK, the last 30 seconds, etc. and to me were I a GM, I'm not paying a guy $11 million to be a one way player.

I do think his last deal was value for the Senators (7 years/$45.5 million/$6.5 million AAV) much like Doughty's was for LA but my limit with this guy is $9.5 million on a long term deal, $10 million on a shorter team deal. He isn't even close to being in Doughty's zip code as a three zone controlling defender and IMO shouldn't be paid like one.

He should however get paid for that bad ass mullet and the molester mustache, he is built to play a Hollywood bad guy.

=)~~

Looked up TOI stats on Karlsson. Last year his SH TOI was pathetic--1:27. Doughty 2:45, Weber 3:00. Among the top 20 defensemen for total TOI only Byfuglien's SH TOI was lower. How the hell can Karlsson even be considered for a Norris as best defenseman in the league when his coach doesn't even trust him when defense is needed most--when SH. What a freaking joke. If he gets Doughty money that team is nuts, would be criminal. The guy is a horrible defensive defenseman, which is the first priority for that position.

He can be considered because the Norris Trophy has become one of those trophies that are based on emotion instead of fact in the last 12-15 years and which defenseman is the buzz in hockey for a length of about 2-3 years.

When guys like Lidstrom, Chelios, Pronger, Stevens, Niedermeyer, etc. were winning it it was because these guys truly were the best defenders in their positions at both ends of the ice. Any of those guys mentioned controlled both ends of the ice.

Somewhere, somehow, down the line it became "who racks up the most points?" and I use the 2005-06 season as the starting point for this change because guys like Lidtsrom were getting older and phasing out and the newer guys like Subban and Keith coming in.

Around 2010 when Keith won, it changed to pretty much which defender puts up the most points even though their defensive acumen wasn't on par with their offensive skill. The Doughty win was one of those "well, he has shown he is the best defenseman all around the last few years, we better give it to him" awards much like Hedman's was this year so they do sprinkle that in now and again but overall it comes down to who is racking up the points.

I hate thee award these days because it has strayed so much from what it originally was meant to be.

Weber out 5-6 months after knee surgery, I wouldn't be surprised if Blake is on the horn talking about Pacioretty again involving one of the defensemen (Voynov?):

Canadiens' Shea Weber out 5-6 months after knee surgery - Sportsnet.ca

Folin signs 1 year/$800,000 deal with the Flyers. I felt he was worthy of a multi year deal after his play here but apparently not. The market must have been really bad, he actually took a $50,000 pay cut to go there:

Flyers sign Christian Folin to one-year contract

They actively pursued him in 2014 when he went to U Mass and became a free agent but he signed with Minnesota instead and then came to LA last season. I liked his game, good bottom pair defender but much like the Matt Greenes and Alzners of the world these guys are getting phased out.

Players who filed for Arbitration:

43 NHL players file for salary arbitration - Sportsnet.ca

Long list. Keep in mind just because they file doesn't mean they can't settle beforehand. Karlsson of Vegas is the one i am really keeping an eye on, that one should be interesting arbitration or not.

Lightning have stepped in as primary player in the Erik Karlsson sweepstakes, trying to get a third team involved to absorb some of the finances:

Remember how the name Elliott just irritates the hell out of me? So does this guy's face:

The stats say Karlsson still his dominant self - Article - TSN

Offensively, sure, he was fine I suppose even a little down. Why not show the whole story about his end of the ice bud? Yeah, those stats are dominant too - like they have been his entire career, pretty crappy.

I guess it depends on what you as a GM have as an idea for your team, perhaps thinking pairing him with a SAH guy will make up for his shortcomings and the offense is where he will shine. His deployment in the defensive zone was already low in Ottawa so I can't see that as a new strategy. All I know is that the team he goes to better a) be very good defensively as a whole and b) better have a solid netminder.

Were I one however, as I stated earlier, I'm not paying Doughty money for glorified forward. Ottawa offered him 8 years/$80 million which I think is more than fair. I had him capped at about $9-9.5 million max, the extra $4 million is the premium for covering his UFA years.

Sounds like the city of Columbus isn't on the list of places to retire for Panarin:

Agent: Panarin unsure on staying in Columbus long-term - Article - TSN

Not sure how to interpret this - is he after money or does he seriously not like living in Columbus? I'm from OH, and while it's a different place it isn't that bad, especially a big metro area like Columbus.

I'm from Youngstown, which has a population of about 65,000 now, smaller when we left in 1986. The closest "big" city would be Cleveland about 90 miles west and then some cities in northern PA and NY about 90 miles east. Cleveland is a dump, always has been, I can only imagine it has gotten worse but Columbus is pretty nice so not sure what the deal is with him.

Interesting read from Bernstein:

Not Your Daddy's Kings

If Kovalchuk had not signed in LA, there was a deal in place for Skinner with he Hurricanes and possibly one for Pacioretty. With the Habs he suggests it was Muffin and Anderson-Dolan, no word on the Skinner deal.

He's also saying Blake is not done and they may be moving a defender - as many of us have figured they would - for reinforcements up front.
