Trout is clearly better and you really don't have an argument.

Martinez is on a much better team, so that helps his case.

Trout has an OBP 60+ points higher and he has a wRC+ 18 points higher. And unlike Martinez, Trout can actually provide baserunning value and play defense. I love JD but he has no legit argument over Trout. Trout's been the best player in MLB for 6.5 years now and this year is no exception.

I'm a Red Sox fan but think Trout should get the AL MVP, just compare the 2 rosters and think about where the Red Sox would be without Martinez and the Angels without Trout. Red Sox probably still are a playoff team and the Angels wouldn't be at .500.

anyway

NL CYA: Max Scherzer (pretty much a coinflip between him and deGrom)
AL CYA: Luis Severino (another tough one right now; Bauer/Sale/Kluber/Verlander are right there as well)

NL MVP: Nolan Arenado (or Freeman or Realmuto)
AL MVP: Mike Trout (lol)

NL RoY: Juan Soto (I'm hesitant to go with him considering he has only 39 games, but he's just been killing it and the rest of the NL field is meh outside of Acuna and Soto's stats blow his away)
AL RoY: Gleyber Torres

AL CY is easily Edwin Diaz. No other pitcher has even come close to having the impact he has had.

A reliever who pretty much never goes more than an inning nor inherits runners....

I know... People just like to use stats on here (as they should) and I was throwing those out there is all. As I mentioned earlier it's Trout's to lose but it's not like Martinez is completely blown away by Trout (numbers wise)

I also think it begs the age old question, what does "valuable" really mean.

Because it's pretty damn hard to see any single player who's more valuable to their team right now then JD Martinez.

I honestly don't think you truly can define "value" right now. Because everyone has a different opinion of it. As I said it's Trout's to lose but numbers wise (forget defense) as you mentioned Martinez has been very "valuable" to the Red Sox... Sh&t when a Yankees fan say's something like that, you know it's legit!

Also - this thread is in regards to MIDWAY point awards.... I don't think the Red Sox would be where they are either without Martinez... So midway you have to put him in the discussion.... All I am saying

The Red Sox would probably be 7 games behind the Yankees

And the Angels would be on pace to miss the playoffs

Thats why I agree that JD Martinez is the MVP
