this boogie cousins thing for 5 million has me on the edge of no longer watching the nba. I'm far from alone. something needs to be done to address this. I have a couple of ideas:

1 - assign players a rating system, perhaps using something similar to VORP. assign a "ranking" to players, maybe in tiers, and you are allowed only so many tier guys per team. something to that effect. take contracts out of it...and use a ranking system. keep a cap so to speak, but revenue sharing like MLB.

2 - perhaps set a market value "bottom" for every player, based on the above. you're not allowed to sign for less than your low end market value.

3 - just let 4 teams run the NBA, and let guys take below market value deals just to fit on a team of stars.

4 - i start watching the WNBA and cry while i punch myself in the nuts.

somethings gotta give

As long as the ratings are fine nothing will be done. Basketball is more soap opera than sport. It's basically The Real Housewives of sports at this point.

Why does something have to give?

The Warriors are a unique team. They combined brilliant front office work with getting lucky, in some ways extraordinarily lucky. Take out the Warriors and the league is really really competitive.

People are overstating the impact of Cousins signing with the Warriors.

Cousins is coming off an achillies injury. People need to do the research as to the effectiveness of the players who have had that type of injury. He's not going to be BOOGIE next year. But by the time he's back to his old self, guess who's back on the free market?

Hard cap? Open market? Teams can offer whatever they want to players currently on their roster? 10 yr deals etc while free agency only allows 4 yr contracts? I have no idea

Exactly. If everything goes really well, he will probably be 80-90% around playoff time. But even then he will STILL only likely play 20 MPG or so.

Good for the Warriors but bad for the NBA.

I don’t understand who watches the regularly season? I can see watching your own team but it is basically a 82 gm pre-season. I basically watch the opening week and Christmas.

The problem is that they've tried all of that.

The only real way to change it would be put rules in place that the player's association would NEVER accept.

They should contract, like half the league. Maybe not half, but get rid of about 10 teams or so.

But how many times do you think something like this will happen?

It's kinda like the KD move to the Warriors. That only happened because the PA wouldn't agree to staggering the cap which gave the Warriors the space to bring KD on. If they had staggered the cap, the Warriors would have had no way of signing him.

Historically, all pro sports teams have looked at their league rules to find ways to game the system. What we are seeing in the NBA is the players joining in on the fun.

Not unless the Commissioner gets fed up like many fans.
Yeah all them fed up fans watching, going to games, buying merch, talking about the teams all day online. They love fed up fans like that.

I don't even watch that anymore but I'm a Knick fan so....... I'll throw playoff game on my laptop while I watch something on TV and switch if it's something like game one of the finals. Once the Cavs lost game one I didnt watch a second of even the finals.
