He had a historic 8-year run in that city, and for that particular purpose he should by all means have his jersey retired. But, at the end of the day - As soon the going got tough, he went running.

You be the judge.

Nope.

I really think jersey retirements should be only for guys who have HOF-like careers with one team.

Or, at least bring multiple titles to that team, which he was not able to accomplish

He could pull a Lebron and return, which would change everything. Otherwise, it's a tough sell.

That's yet to be determined.

To me, I say yes because like Westbrook, Durant was a valuable asset to the team. He helped take the Thunder to their first NBA Finals in the 2011-12 season only losing to the Heat. I also think they will retire Westbrook's jersey when his career's said and done.

No, because jersey retirements are 99% for the fans and the OKC fans don't like KD anymore.

No worries though, because GS will if he gets a couple more rings there.

I think they should, but they won't.

Depends on the franchise and owner.

Shaq got his jersey retired in Miami and he left on worst terms than Durant. Lebron left on bad terms, but he'll get his jersey retired at some point - and yes, that's fully aware that both players won title(s) in Miami.

Durant could've retired two years ago and he probably would still be in the HOF. He's accomplished enough with that team. Lessser players have had their jerseys retired with other franchises than Durant.

The day Durant retires from the NBA, the fans will like him again. That's just my say.

The going didn’t get tough.

It had been tough.

He just realized that playing alongside the stat hound wasn’t gonna get him the greatness he wanted

What's historic about his run? One Finals appearance?

Considering he was on the original OKC Thunder team, MVP, Finals Appearance, Multiple All-stars and All-NBA teams and won a Gold Medal all while sporting their uniform, should be enough to retire his jersey.

If you don't think so, you're just being petty.

Then how come Shaq didn't get his retired in Orlando?

MVP, All-Star appearances and a Gold Medal are all personal accomplishments. Nothing to do with OKC

It's not just that one Finals appearance by him and the Thunder, it's what he has accomplished in his career there. He was voted MVP in the 2013-14 season, All-NBA first team five times (2010-2014), he was voted NBA All-Star every year since 2010 and he was part of the 50-40-90 club in the 2012-13 season, which is rare in the NBA. He had a very good run in OKC, and it sucked that he took the coward's way out by desperately wanting to win an NBA title by joining the Warriors. :(

Shaq had a much shorter career with the Magic. In addition, he didn't win an MVP with them. He was an All-NBA 2nd and 3rd teamer when he was with them.

KD played at the highest level of basketball for the franchise for 9 years.

Well if you discount MVP, All-Star Appearances and any personal accomplishments, what the hell criteria are you using to allow them to have a jersey retired? LOL. C'mon now...

Seriously?!?

How about.... winning a title?

Are you honestly saying Durants tenure in OKC was historic?

I wouldn't call it historic, but he still had a great run regardless.

Hell, Pete Maravich didn't win a championship in college or pro and he had his #7 jerseys retired in both Utah and New Orleans and he also had his #44 jersey retired in Atlanta, and he had a short NBA career which lasted from 1970-80. Maravich has a fantastic run in the NBA, but sadly his ongoing knee problems ended his career prematurely.

So Charles Barkley shouldn't have his jersey retired by the Suns?

Reggie Miller only made the allstar team 5 times while playing for the Pacers and never won a championship.

Historic is relative to the franchise. OKC literally has no history. They're not holding on to Sonics legacy. KD was the first great superstar in the team's franchise history. That is historic.

You read my mind. Barkley was the first guy that came to mind

Jersey retirements are a whole lot of pomp and circumstance and are, for most intents and purposes (excluding Jackie Robinson) much ado about nothing.

Big whoop if they do.

Big whoop if they don't.
