Miguel Cabrera has seen his better days in the MLB. He's gone the same route Albert Pujols is age-wise. I can see him put up some good game down the road, but he won't be the same elite hitter as he once was in his prime.

Chipper played until he was 40 and was productive right up until his last AB. Of course, he became more of a slap hitter than a power hitter the last few years.

Miguel only turns into a slap hitter when he's had a few beers in him.

Too soon?

Dude signed his contract in 2016 and immediately quit juicing.

Even if he was 100% clean (which I doubt). That is an absolutely absurd contract to give out to a guy his age. I get that Illich wanted to win one before he died, but that's just a bad deal.

Chipper missed a lot of time those last few years, so that hurts the case to say he 'aged well.' From age 33 on, he missed over 40 games per year on average.

Babe Ruth hit 41 HRs when he was 37 and 34 the next year, but he was clearly on a slippery slope down at that time.
Cy Williams hit 30 when he was 39, but that was only the second time he got out of the 20s (41 HR when he was 35). He had an odd career in general, but his numbers look really strange because he was half in the deadball era and half liveball.

I was talking about Chris Davis, but you're absolutely right.

Miggy's contract is atrocious. If I remember correctly, they extended him a couple of years before free agency, too. Just completely stupid, but that's Dombrowski for you.

It's up there with the contract Ryan Howard got from the Phillies.

I think the trend is going to go away from giving these big bashers big contracts. The stars are going to be the guys who both hit for power and play good defense and will stay in shape.

The pitchers still will get paid, but the days of absurd long-term contacts for the 1B/DH types are about to be a thing of the past.

That was just good, clean living, right Rocko?

@Rock Strongo
also, he didnt "decline significantly" from 32-34

age 32 .877 OPS (he was .942 career going into that season)
age 33 .794 OPS ("papis dead" season) still had 28/99
age 34 .899 OPS, back on track

ortiz had ONE season under .850 OPS here....and that was it.

Unlike A-Rod, Ortiz actually tested positive for PEDs.

when?

unless you mean that leaked test where guys "failed" for non banned substances? littany of info on that at you fingertips.

We will find out later this year with machado/harper both expecting big contracts but they are younger so will only be 35 in 10 years:suds:

I guess the real test is what donaldson gets but injuries have derailed him

I don't care that the test that Ortiz failed wasn't MLBPA sanctioned. Shit, the fact that wild dopers like Clemens, Bonds and A-Rod never failed an MLBPA sanctioned test erode those tests' credibility.

The fact that he failed any test, coupled with his career trajectory and the era and location in which he played is more than enough for me to assume Ortiz took PEDs.

It just amuses me that someone would defend any professional athlete against PED speculation in this day and age, particularly a guy like Ortiz. So, when the topic comes up, I like to bring you into the mix.

I don't give a shit what the Pats do.
