Anyone been recently and want to offer a suggested stop?
I'll be in Kilhei on the west side of the island.

Take one of the Road to Hanna tours. Don't try to drive the road yourself.

You’ll get to see the volcano erupt. Maybe you could bring back some hot lava samples.

I would suggest letting the lava cool before you sample them.

Poppycock! I drove the road myself during my first visit. Sketchy AF but definitely worth it! We stopped off near Kipahulu to hike the Pipiwai Trail to the 7 Sacred Pools. It was amazing! The single lane bridges were a little annoying, but it was the rock cliffs on the southeastern side of the island that I would never attempt again. Definitely DO NOT go past Kipahulu.

My wife & I stayed in Maui a few years ago. October of 2015 to be exact. We stayed at the Hyatt Resort on the Kaanapali Beach just north of Lahaina. I would definitely recommend visiting Lahaina & Kaanapali during one of your days. Lahaina has an amazing little tourist strip of shops, restaurants & tourist attractions all along their Front St. Great way to get a dose of local culture (albeit heavily tourist driven). If you go further north to Kaanapali I would recommend driving to Whaler's Village. It's a 3-story outdoor mall with lots of cools stores in it. They have an amazing little restaurant called the Hula Grill where you get to eat dinner on the beach (nothin like eating dinner with your toes in the sand & listening to live music). There's also a walkway that travels a few miles that connects all the resorts. Pretty neat walk if you're into that. And if you can plan it, they do a "Drums of the Pacific Lu'au" at the Hyatt Resort that you can buy tickets for. It's an amazing "all you can eat & drink" experience while watching a Polynesian Lu'au performance.

But if you're looking for closer attractions then you definitely gotta visit Wailea. Their beach destinations are pretty awesome. And IIRC the "Turtle Town" or "Turtle Bay" is nearby. You can snorkel out there amongst hundreds of sea turtles near these ancient lava chute formations for an unbelievable experience. I took the "Pride of Maui Snorkel Tour" that took us to 3 destinations and served us lunch. I would definitely recommend it! They pick you up in Maalea which is very close to Kihei. It's a half-day adventure so don't commit unless you have the time. The 3 stops are Turtle Town, Molokini Crater (amazing place, can only be reach by boat), and somewhere near Makena Beach/Cove.

Also gotta go eat at Mama's Fish House on the northern side of the island just past the airport. The scenic views are amazing on the northside. And the food is legendary.

As far as the Hana Highway topic... I'd recommend it. It's a great scenic drive. Tons and tons of waterfalls & cool little cities. The only downside is their are hundreds of single-lane bridges where you have to yield to oncoming traffic which gets a little frustrating. And like I said to Ewa though, don't pass Kipahulu unless you like shaking hands with the devil. The southeastern side of the island just past that little town is treacherous cliff faces and a single-lane road. I was shitting bricks while driving that portion.

Other general recommendations... If you are renting a car (which is very recommended), once you touch down at Kahului you will want to get to the Walmart nearby the airport. Stock up on supplies. They don't have plastic bags to bag your groceries so be prepared to fill your trunk if you aren't bringing your own bags. Buy or bring lots of sunscreen because you will go through it quickly. Also I would recommend buying your own pair of snorkel gear (fins, mask & breathing tube). You'd be amazed at how much they try to charge the tourists just to rent the things daily. My wife got that tip from one of her friends and we both bought a pair, and were very thankful that we did.

Car insurance is invalid if you drive past Kipahulu. I liked being able to just ride and enjoy the view without having to pay any attention to traffic.

It's in the fine print of the rental car agreement and your own car insurance won't cover either. Since I was a resident of Hawaii at the time, I was clued in. I guess they let the tourists find out the hard way.
