Signing guys past their prime has been the Giants way of doing business for a while now, but already Longoria (ankle) and Melencon(arm) are down and the season hasn't yet started. I suppose it was worth a try but they should have learned their lesson by now.

It is just sad that the players have not been playing with more heart this spring. These guys clearly don’t have the drive.

Boch needs to really rip them a new one.

Heart has nothing to do with injuries; its more age.

I'd hate to think that when I turn 32, I will be too old to play a sport.

I've read that major league infielders have the biggest dropoff in ability when they hit 30 or 31 but I think the really good ones make up for some of that because all of their experience makes them better at learning where to play and anticipating where a ball is going. But fear not, people play golf and tennis at the recreational level into their 80's all the time.

Early yet but it'll be interesting to see how things play out for the Giants this year. I like Longoria and hope he does well.

I don't know what to think about the Giants. I think with them more than anything it depends on the pitching. If you look back at the last 8 seasons where they make the playoffs every other year, the offense doesn't look that much different in the even years than the odd ones. (Although I think 2010 was definitely a notch above the rest of those years). Belt is pretty established as a good hitter and I could see Longoria having one more big year. Who knows

I have this illusion that I can still play slow pitch and I go out and find my glove in a bag in the tool shed. The damned thing feels like a bad case of poured concrete. I put the glove back in the bag and say I'll be all right if I can find a sale on gloves at Dick's S.G. I led our team in hitting when I was 45, but that was 26 years ago.

McCutchen?
Yeah, I forgot about McCutchen. I like him. I'm not sure why he dropped off the last couple years but even if he produces for the Giants the way he did for the Pirates last year that will be very solid.

I was at my friend's club a couple weeks ago and there was 4 guys that had to be all in their 70's and 80's playing tennis and it was pretty amazing. (I think it was a league for people over 65 or something but they all looked older than that). Granted, it was doubles, on clay and they all had rackets that looked giant that probably weighed next to nothing. Still pretty entertaining to watch. I guess the key to playing sports as you get older is to keep playing people in your same age group.

Same reason as Longoria; age.

Dudes at my golf club in their 80's regularly shoot in the 80's. That's a sport you can play all your life.

Yeah, but McCutchen's dropoff came at age 29. That is supposed to be a prime year. Maybe he's not eating healthy or something.

Yeah, definitely. The sport that really seems to take a toll on people is basketball. People weren't meant to jump up and down on wood/concrete for hours at a time. Plus the people that are naturally good are bigger and taller and it takes even more of a toll on their knees.

Come July, if the Giants arent competing, it may be time to gut it, and no better trade partner than the Yankees for Bumgardner

Thats my dream scenario, Yankees can re-stock that Giants farm system come July

Chase Utley's a good example.

Yeah, I saw they signed him for another year so they must think he has some ability to play second still. He hasn't really hit enough the last few years to play first
