Doesn’t it take like 6-8 months to recover from a hamet-ectomy? How long did Sandoval miss when he had his surgeries?

I guess he kinda kills two birds with one stone? Starting depth and lefty depth? I think he'd make for a pretty solid LOOGY option tbh. He can still reach the mid-90s with his fastball, especially in spurts.

I hope the Giants can do better though. As far as rotation depth they certainly can.

What in his last five years makes you think that?

What in his last five years makes you think that?

A .255/.314/.357 line, 0.7 HR per 9, 10.3 percent HR/FB rate and 53.1 percent groundball rate versus lefties the past 5 years combined, all in extreme HR heavy home ballparks.

His fastball would ideally play up in short bursts. He topped out at 95 mph with his fastball last year, 97 in 2016.

I don't anticipate him to be good, or even make the team for that matter, but there's some there that makes me think it could be worth a shot as a LOOGY. As a starter, no thanks.

FWIW he has a 4.75 ERA with a .274/.341/.443 line as a reliever in his career, though he was not used strictly as a LOOGY as far as I can tell. 41.2 innings pitched in 24 games.

Maybe that is why Jackson was signed at the 4th man, because they anticipated Gorkys not being ready for Opening Day.

I don't typically understand this either. Like I sometimes get it for fringe guys like Hernandez, finally gets a shot on a lot of playing time but an extended absence could bury him..... but his shitty play could too. I guess it's somewhat excused by coaches knowing he's hurt? Maybe that's why Bochy loved him so much because he was playing through an injury?

Hamate bones typically hurt a players power numbers, so that could explain some, but it shouldn't have really hurt his defense.
And that is why I think the idea of playing through an injury is stupid. Most of the time, the player's numbers suffer. But I guess it work in Gorkys' case, in that he was able to keep a roster spot all last season. Had he gone on the DL, would the Giants have kept him around? Depends on if he had as much sway in the org as Morse did.

It's typically a weeks type of recovery. Usually 4-8 weeks.

In 2011 Sandoval missed about 6 weeks, in 2012 he missed about 5.

In terms of LOOGYs, there is not a whole lot left out there. The only ones really worth consideration are Tony Watson and maybe Fernando Abad. Any others really wouldn't profile better than Holland (Breslow, de la Rosa, Liriano and O. Perez).

There are still plenty of starters on the market, even if you look outside the top two tiers (i.e. Arrieta and co, and Lynn and co). There are guys like Brett Anderson, Clay Buchholz, AJ Griffin, Ubaldo Jimenez, Anibal Sanchez and Chris Tillman. All have their worts but if they sign a minor league deal, I'd be okay with them coming in to compete.
I don't know if the Giants will try to sign another lefty to compete for a bullpen spot but one more came off the market. Craig Breslow signed a minor league deal with the Blue Jays. That leaves the following (not counting primarily starters still on the market):

1. Watson
2. Abad
3. de la Rosa
4. Liriano
5. Siegrist
6. Perez

I was actually on my way here to make your day with this news.
Well, @SFGRTB is the one who got me hooked on this guy, I just carried the torch recently. If he gets signed, I do wonder what that does for the luxury tax and if it signals that the Giants are still going to pick up a center fielder. My only real concern about Watson is length of contract. Of course, for most free agents, that is my concern. Don't keep them too long!

The CBT issue makes this one a head scratcher. M&M brought it up when they were talking about it.

Why go the whole off-season walking the tightrope only to just pass it by a nose at the last second?

And he will definitely put them over that threshold. Seems that the Giants aren't the only one talking to him. The Giants may only succeed in pushing up his price tag.

Watson is projected to get 12/2, so I'm wondering who gets shipped out if we want to stay under, or if we're going over anyway, are we picking up Martinez?

Where would Martinez play? Do they make Pence the 4th outfielder and start Martinez/Jackson/McCutcheon? I would think the Giants would pick up a center fielder over Martinez if they just decide to blow past the threshold.

The CBT isn't calculated until the end of the year so the Giants can go over now and be perfectly fine, as long as they make a couple of moves to get under it at the end of the year.

I don't see them blowing past it. Stanton was a rule breaker, I don't think Martinez is.

Dyson should be able to get shipped off later in the year if the Giants need to get under.

There will be a team out there willing to take a shot on him, or the Giants attach a C-level prospect to get it done.

Interesting note here..... The Mets apparently "covet" Joe Panik and attempted to engage the Giants in a Juan Lagares swap.

Obviously that hasn't happened, and the Mets would have to give up more than that undoubtedly.

I like Panik, but shipping him to the Mets just makes sense. They would likely be willing to pay above market in a trade Tom acquire him, so I think there is lots of reason to look there...

I agree it makes sense. Trading him to them, or the Yankees, makes a ton of sense on many levels. And the Giants would do him a solid trading him to NY.

I don't see it right now though. The Giants have managed to put together a pretty strong offseason that signals a team intending to compete. And based on the results from FanFest, they've also managed to win over the casual fanbase as well. Trading Panik mucks things a bit. Plus who takes over? Arroyo was a logical replacement. Now? I know the Giants have a wealth of second-base types, but the Giants are letting one of them step in if they intend to compete.

Maybe in July if things totally unravel.

Definitely not now. But in July or December, sure.
