The Yankees hurt them but they had some years that they laid an egg. I honestly would have bet money they would have won more than 1 world series. I'm a Ted Turner fan. He did what it took to build a great franchise.

I can't remember the exact year, sometime in the early 70's with the advent of Cable TV.
They became the Team of the South. WTBS (Now TNT) The Super Station. Brave game
every night with Milo and Ernie.

Milo was something else..."That ball would be trouble in the A City, but it's just a can of corn
here in the Dome."

Who do you replace him with is always scary. That can backfire big-time on you.
But, you can do year round research and hopefully line someone up.

WVU doesn't have the glowing numbers all time BUT, they are one of only 9 Power 5 schools that have
never had a losing traditional Decade ('00-'09) They may not over win, but they compete and win
more than they lose in a 10-year period of time.

I don't know anything about his contract, buy-out, whatever, but he certainly hasn't reached
the levels of RichRod and the WVU alum that followed him.

Now this is just me, but he doesn't look like he fits in there. Maybe they like that horrible
hair of his...but I don't think so. Orgeron would fit in there. And I'm not taking a poke
at WVU. He just looks like he could fit in with those folks. They'd like him.

Whatever...it's their school, they'll do what they have to do.

I agree, He is an ok enough guy but he seems to try a little too hard to "fit" imo. No questioning his offensive mind, its good but he leaves a ton to be desired when it comes to defense and special teams philosophy. Pretty much the same thing as Leach and all his disciples.

WVU needs the right "fit" to make it work. Don Nehlen was a Bo and Woody guy and built his teams in that image and that's what WVU fans tend to relate to. RichRod changed some of that with his spread run based offense and that gimmicky 3-3-5 defense (which I hate with a passion). Agree ya have to be careful and do your due diligence when hiring a HC or it will cost you several years (see WVU and the Bill Stewart hire post RichRod up until today) but I think we have people in place now with Gee (Ohio State) and Lyons (Alabama) who get it and would be able to make a very solid hire that fits if/when the time should come.

I have a question about Stewart.

He had 3 straight 9-4 seasons which was a bit off from RichRod. Then he departed. Shortly after that
he died. I never understood why he left. He wasn't as offensive minded as RichRod but had ample
success.

Did he know he was dying of something? As best as I can remember I didn't think he liked
being let go/replaced, whatever. But, maybe I didn't read follow-up stories.

No he died of a sudden heart attack golfing after he was let go.
He had success with RichRods guys and he got a few guys but his retention rate and number of guys not panning out for one reason or the other and frustrating offense is what got him ran.
For example, the team walked off the field after that Orange bowl win against Clemson (Dana’s first year which was ahead of schedule Stew tries to get Dana fired and WVU forced him out earlier than planned) had 58 out of a possible 85 scholarship football players returning for the 2012 season (first in the Big12) because of all the attrition, think NCAA sanctions level attrition without violating any rules. Stew was just a terrible el cheap hire by the then administration at WVU (it’s changed a few times since then). He was a bad bad hire, WVU didn’t even do a search for a qualified candidate when RichRod left and Jimbo Fisher was actually a possible candidate at the time.. :noidea:never know how things could have panned out.
That and the unforeseen switch to the Big12 (remember, we hired Dana to win the BigEast, not the Big12) bought Dana a lot of rope as far as patience but... times about up on that end.

Thanks for that.

Now I recall a bit of pub about Stewart not being what RichRod was and WVU fans being irked with
him. I remember him blowing the lead against us in the 09 Gator Bowl. WVU was up 14-0 and
then the lights went out. Never really knew about his death though.

For Dana he came on too strong. He had to really set expectations going 10-3 his 1st
year and beating Clemosn 70-30 something in the O-Bowl. Since then, except for 2016
it's been pretty rugged for WVU. He was the OC at Okla St...wasn't he?

Oh well...y'all will work it out.

Yes he was a really good OC and imo that’s his best role in CFB, an OC under a HC that handles the other phases and also keeps Dana from being too risky as far as 4th down tries ect.

Dana as the OC at a big brand program would be terrifying as far as trying to stop him but as a HC at a 2nd tier program... meh ok I guess but nothing special.... at least so far.

like 2012 and 2013?
and their current slide?
Were they not allowed to have any adjustment period moving up to the PAC? And in one of those years they were able to knock off the eventual PAC champ. Not exactly flopping like a fish. Meanwhile they have nowhere near what Oregon has in place. There's no excuse for Oregon to be as bad as they have been.
I don't think I'd call one rebuilding year a slide either. If they go around 6-6 this year then I'm with you.

My issue was with saying every few years they have a great team.
coming out of MWC strong 3 double digit win season in a row. one decent 2 bad one back up to 9. is 9 considered great? a 10 win? is 10 considered great. then 9 then 7.

for the record also Oregon's excuse was getting an oregon guy in Helfrich who clearly wasnt the right guy. coaching decisions were bad. recruiting was bad. staff choices were bad.

But you had Hokamania clapping on the sideline with millions of Hokamaniacs watching. Dude was solid, brother.
Yes I know you were pretty reserved about the hire but still...

I would say for Utah 10 wins is great given their current status and +/-1 from that is pretty acceptable. So for him to say every few years was correct, even with the couple of bad in between. That was a major change in competition that they had to adjust to. Only a fool would have expected them to have 10 win seasons right away. They're pretty much on track.

I agree that Helfrich ended up not being the guy and lost the team. He was in charge the season of their playoff and NC appearance though. Bad recruiting? No. They averaged 20 while Utah averaged 43 over that same span.
