I'm not a numbers guy, but my understanding of how it works is if they cut him then they eat only the Dead Cap. Is that correct? I'm sure its a little more complicated.

According to spotrac.... Joe Haden

Haden's cap hit is $11.9mil this year & next year. They cut him this year they eat a dead cap of $3.8mil, which saves them roughly $8mil against the cap. Pretty decent savings, no? They would save an extra $2mil, making it $10mil saved, if they waited until the 2019 offseason to cut him.

None of it matters though because I'm more than positive that he isn't going anywhere. In the coaches' eyes Haden's value lies far beyond his pricetag. Tomlin lauded Haden as a top 10 CB, and said he has the best leadership skills amongst anyone in the league. That sort of miraculous acquisition doesn't happen only to cut ties a year later based off a pricetag.
Kinda makes you wonder what the hell Cleveland was doing cutting him til you remember, Cleveland!

Yea the Browns were stuck in a difficult position with him. They gave him a $75mil contract and he played only 18 games since signing it. They lost faith/patience and I'm sure his cap hit in 2017 on that contract was absurd. Hence why they couldn't find a trade partner.

He shouldn't be here & you don't want him here? That's absurd.

Butler or Trumaine Johnsons would be an acceptable tradeoff, but the pricetag could be just as high. Fuller & Johnson are gambles.

Why do I want him here? He hasn't been a productive member of the Browns for 2 years and we expected him to be a productive member here? Plus we paid him too much? We need talent on this team and our secondary sucks dick. Haden is the oldest of the bunch and he was one of the most unproductive of the bunch. I'm not worried so much about the money aspect, I'm willing to pay Haden that much if his numbers back it up. That's why I'm do adamant about needing to pay Bell because he's shown he's worth what he's asking for. Haden isn't worth what we are paying him and he hasn't been worth that since he got his concussion. Sorry, but I don't want Joe Haden here next year. I'd rather pay the same amount for a guy like Malcolm Butler.

That is a very short-sighted view and the Steelers' FO doesn't operate that way.

It's a short-sighted view that says what this teams needs. We don't need help on the offense. Like I said, we might want to draft 1 WR but we have 4 TEs on the roster, 4 RBs, we drafted a QB last year that looked better as the preseason went on. We need secondary help and we need a replacement for the Shazier spot. Maybe the Steelers' FO need to wake up because last season shouldn't of ended the way it did. No reason we lose to the Bears in OT. No reason we let teams like the Browns and Colts who combined for 4 wins last year come within 3 points of beating us. Time to get serious, boys. We only got Ben for a few more years, we need to make the most of it and we need to get some talent and depth on defense.

No stats to back it up? He started 9 games before getting injured. During that stretch the Steelers passing defense allowed 182yds per game (178yds per game if you include week 16 & 17). During the stretch that he missed (weeks 11-15), the Steelers passing defense allowed 252yds per game... Those are the only stats you need.

Those stats are so skewed when you look at the QBs they faced weeks 1-9. QBs like Trubisky, Bortles, Kizer, Keenum's first game as a starter. Stafford threw for over 400 on our secondary with Haden in the game.

Haden started 11 games, he recorded 0 statistical information in 3 of those games and those games were against Chicago, Jacksonville and Indy, probably our most embarrassing games last year. His best statistical game was against the Browns in week 1. 4 tackles and 1 sack. That was the only time he got a sack all year and the only time he recorded 4 or more tackles in a game all season.

He's regressing, we knew that when we signed him and we're paying him $9 mil a year. What a great value.

The offense doesn't need help this year, maybe, but the FO is always looking a lot further into the future then this year. Plus they don't draft solely for need. Never have. Take a deep breath Terry, they were 13-3 last year. It's not all doom and gloom. Ben may only be here for a couple more years but AB and Bell if they sign him aren't. The NFL is all about parity, even bad teams don't get blown out of the water every game.

I have every confidence the FO will target the players they want and think will improve the team plus fit the Steeler mold/type and there is is one. While we all like to speculate about who that should be, none of us are at all of the workouts or in the interview rooms. We don't get to see what happens on those individual visits, so we have to trust the scouts and FO.

The Steelers' every year is to win the SB. Chuck Noll instilled that his very first year as coach and it has never changed. The FO office, coaches and players don't need to get serious about that this year. In the Burgh, they're serious about that EVERY YEAR!

Depending on their offseason moves and draft this year, their seriousness about winning may be put into question.

Disagree. It's hard to records stats when opposing teams are avoiding you and your side of the ball. Plus they rarely blitzed Haden, so why would he have very many sacks??? The secondary was clearly better with him playing than not.

So you don't wanna see a 13-3 season again??? 13-3 seasons are not embarrassing by any stretch of the imagination! Ben and the Steelers have always won ugly, they don't care as long as they win and neither do I!!!

I'm just tired of it. We have the talent but something happens and it's against crap fucking teams and the Patriots. Also, this year was a special case of stupidity by all the distractions we had. Bell, Brown, Ben, Bryant, James Harrison and overlooking the Jags in the playoffs after getting embarrassed by them 3 months earlier. Sickening.

13-3 is embarrassing the way we did it and the fact that we got NOTHING to show for it. I care as long as that ugly doesn't work its way into the locker room and the playoffs and it did.

I don't see how Steelers fans can be happy with the way things went last year. 13-3 is a great season but now how we did it. Sorry, I can't be happy with last year.

If you can't be happy with 13 wins then maybe you need to start rooting for Cleveland??? They had a perfect season ya know.

But look at the season. What do we have to show for it? Look at who we lost to, how we played on the field, how the players handled the Harrison release, Bell's crap, Brown's flip out, Ben's sarcasm, Bryant's BS, how we handled the playoff game against Jacksonville. 13 wins is a great season, but we didn't have a regular 13 win season and nobody can deny that. We almost lost to the Colts, Browns (twice), a Rodgers-less Packers team and we lost to the Bears in OT and embarrassed in our own house to the Jaguars twice. Once because our defense didn't show up and once because our defense didn't show up AND we OVERLOOKED them because we were too focused on the damn Patriots. It was not a memorable season. It wasn't a remarkable season. We got another division title. Good for us.

I can't look at last season as anything but, just another season of regret. Let's repeat the 13-3 season but with better on field play and less off field distractions.

Stop yourself. A CB recording 0 statistical information is a GREAT thing regardless of the QB they face. The games against Chicago & Jacksonville were failures on the run defense, not the secondary. Maybe he missed a tackle or 2 in those games, but he is far from the problem they had during those games. He did however record 1 pass-breakup in the Chicago game. And you can go ahead and exclude the Indy game since he exited that game in the 1st QUARTER!

He may be regressing, but he's the best player they have in the secondary.
