North Texas teacher dies after getting the flu

She waited to pick up the meds because she couldn't afford the $116 copay.

Thoughts and prayers for the family, but...

What a bunch of bullshit. She had the flu for a week...there is no medicine for the flu. It's a freaking virus. Tamiflu helps if taken within 48 hours of getting the flu...most people don't go to the doc for the flu until the 3rd day or more. I bet a secondary bacterial infection did her in

"She reportedly started to feel sick a week ago and was going to pick up flu medication. Her husband said she decided not to purchase the medication because she thought the $116 price tag was too high, according to The Weatherford "

Secondary infections can cause death in flu cases, but the flu itself kills by making the body kill itself. Taking a medication which helps the body defeat the virus, and/or which lessens symptoms, can be life-saving in such an instance.

Read up on the bullshit that is Tamiflu...after a week, that wasn't going to do shit. Her sepsis, or whatever infection is not flu related.

So you're saying she should have started her medication sooner?

What is even your argument here? She likely starts the medicine immediately if she's not hesitating over cost, and then it doesn't get to the point where it doesn't help.

And if the medicine wouldn't have helped, then she'd have needed the more cost-prohibitive measure of care in a hospital. The point stands regardless.

No...she went to the doctor a week later...a week. Tamiflu may only lessen the flu symptoms by a day when taken within 48 hours of the flu. This is a bullshit story...

Does it even matter? Regardless of this one woman and what happened to her, tens of millions of people (especially the poor and vulnerable, including millions of kids) don't have health insurance and are at risk. In the richest county in the world. In a supposedly predominantly Christian nation. In a county paying the most for healthcare for some reason.

I've personally hesitated to go to the doctor in the past because of high co-pays or not having insurance at the time and that's bullshit. And it happens to tens of millions of people. Socialized medicine countries do it cheaper and better. They live longer, it doesn't cost them as much, and everyone has access to healthcare.

Let's repeat that - it's cheaper.... it's better... and everyone has access to it.

This shouldn't even be a debate. We should be moving to the system that is better in literally EVERY single way. But we aren't due to (1) rich lobbies, (2) half the country fearing the word socialism in an already predominantly socialist society because they're fucking dumb as a bag of Doritos, and (3) we are easily distracted from our duties as a citizen because...

Sorry, Doritos sound good. I'll be back later after I get some Doritos. Probably Cool Ranch.
