Homer isn't your average animated character. Homer is routinely ranked in the top five characters of ALL tv shows. He is rarely ranked behind other comedic characters.

Normally I don't respond to stuff like this, but this is a silly statement. It's not like there's a way to actually quantify comedy points. Every list that has ever been done is just one person's opinion on what they find funny. I just typed "funniest sitcom characters of all time" into google and on one list Homer was #1, on another he was #7, on another he was #15 and on another he wasn't in the top 30. Everybody is different when it comes to what they find funny and there are absolutely no "stats" to back anything up. It's not like you can say that Homer is more funny than Al Bundy because Homer averaged 18.7 laughs per episode and Al only averaged 17.9. And Al's best season was a 25.2 LPE and Homer topped out at 28.6 in the epic 2003 season. LOL. Any ensemble cast like Seinfeld is a perfect example as Kramer, George, and Elaine have all been drafted, yet the guy that the show was named after and did a lot of the writing hasn't been drafted yet, and the one character that made me laugh more than any other also hasn't even been drafted yet. If the parameters of this draft were the most iconic sitcom characters of all time Homer probably goes higher, but we're just having some fun and drafting people that actually make each one of us laugh. At the end when we fill up our rosters, maybe we'll have somebody that didn't draft with us actually decide who has the best roster, but once again, that would only be in that person's opinion. Hell they might think that Homer is nothing without Marge and she is actually much more funny than he is.

By who?

How exactly are characters "ranked"?

Super subjective at best. Also, I would bet 25+ seasons has a lot to with that. A run that long is basically impossible for a human cast.
By individual people, voting, panels, whatever. Quite frankly the show could have ended after 10-12 seasons and it wouldn't have changed much. The show is still fine but it was amazing for the first decade or so when people like conan Obrien were writing for it.

but there is a limit to subjectivity... I really think people hide behind their opinions and think just because you think something you can't be wrong... there is a difference between "I think A is better than B" and " A is better than B"

If i said Rhoda is better than seinfeld, you would all call me nuts... but if i said i think Rhoda is better than seinfeld, then you can't argue with me... it is the knowledge of knowing the difference IMO...

With something like this, I don't believe there can possibly be a limit to subjectivity, because there is no way to prove who is right other than using the opinions of other people since there are no stats or numbers that you can use. It doesn't matter if 999 people out of 1000 think that Homer Simpson is better than Marge Simpson, that still doesn't mean that Homer is better because there is no possible way to prove it other than using other people's opinions. Let's say that person watches the Simpsons and just doesn't laugh during Homer's scenes, but Marge makes them laugh out loud each time she's on screen. That person can't possibly be wrong in saying that Marge is a better character because Homer just doesn't make them laugh whereas Marge does. When there is no actual numbers or measure that can quantify who is "better" it will ALWAYS be subjective.

i think you are misunderstanding my point... and i will admit, most of it is semantics...

If i asked you what show was better Rhoda or seinfeld, answering Rhoda is WRONG

If i asked you what show you thought was better, Rhoda or seinfeld, then there is no wrong answer.... It is two different questions...

I agree, that there is a lot of gray area... and that is where the subjectivity is... But in my example, there is NO subjectivity, there is a right and a wrong, even if you(general you) think otherwise...

Meh, perhaps its wrong, but there's more evidence to suggest its possible, than there is that it isn't

i dont think it is fair to call Homer Al Bundy, when they were basically created at the same time... But they are ALL based on the honeymooners... and i am sure there was something before the honeymooners that they were based on...

Night 6's chart:
Deja vu as ehb is on the clock again since 1:02pm.

By my calculations his 18hr time limit expired at 7:02am this morning as tlance points out. As such I've updated the draft list to show molsaniceman is now otc with TREFF od. EHB can make his pick at anytime but we need to move on. ....

They are very different characters. All they really have in common are they are husbands and fathers who are slobs. What makes each of them funny is very different. Al hates his life and has given up, has a crappy job, and scored four touchdowns in one game. Homer loves life, is way under qualified for a good job, and I don't know if he ever scored a td.

Actually, if ehb's clock started 1:02pm CST, his 16 hours expired at 5:02am CST.
I'm sure he'll catch up at some point. Hope he's Ok?
