Orioles Do Not Expect To Trade Manny Machado

With no sufficient bid emerging, the Orioles are now indicating that star third baseman Manny Machado “is staying put,” according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (via Twitter). That could yet change if a big new offer comes in the door, but it seems that Baltimore will no longer actively shop the pending free agent.

On the one hand, then, this news isn’t that impactful. The club had indicated it was nearing the quitting point on active trade talks after prior reports made clear that the team would move on to other plans if its needs weren’t met. Teams that want to land the youthful star know they need to come with a significant package of talent to get something done. Baltimore has expressed a need to get back two quality, controllable starters to make a deal, and Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com’s report from this morning suggests the asking price remains the same.

On the other, it’s an important moment for the O’s offseason strategy. With Zach Britton’s Achilles injury also seemingly taking the club’s best relievers (Britton and Brad Brach) out of trade consideration, it seems the organization will largely maintain its existing core and go out looking to add starters in other ways. With at least two rotation pieces still on the wish list, and no interest in chasing the market for the best-available arms, the Orioles front office will need to work hard to find value.

That said, the rotation market has not moved much at all to this point, so there are plenty of options still out there. Whether or not the slow free agent action will lead to any particular number of bargains remains to be seen, but executive VP of baseball operations Dan Duquette is certainly no stranger to waiting out late opportunities.

Barring a big change in the interest levels from other teams, Machado will evidently play out his original control rights in Baltimore before reaching free agency after the 2018 season. The sides will still need to work out a final-season salary — MLBTR projects a hefty $17.3MM arbitration pay-out — but there’s little reason to think at this point that an extension will realistically be considered.

Still, it’s wise not to rule things out so long as there’s still work to be done in the winter. An extension or trade would surprise at this point, but both are hypothetically just as plausible as ever.

Interestingly, should trade talks get moving again, Kubatko notes that the Cubs and Orioles discussed a variety of notable names. While there’s no reason to think all three Chicago players would have been included in the same deal, Addison Russell, Albert Almora, and Mike Montgomery all came up in chatter.

"The Orioles “continue to hear from multiple teams interested in trading for Manny Machado,” tweets Jon Morosi of MLB Network, who doesn’t believe the club has a firm deadline on trade talks for their star infielder. As Dan Connolly of BaltimoreBaseball.com wrote six days ago, “These incremental updates are white noise.” Unfortunately, that’s all we’ve got right now! Connolly’s best guess at that time: Machado will be traded before Opening Day. For now, we’ll continue to wait for the hot stove to light."

Man I really hope they trade him and hopefully get something useful in return.

This has become a "I'll believe it when I see it" situation. Dan is notorious for moving extremely slow and Angelos will probably do his normal veto at the last minute. As a result, we won't move him until the trade deadline or not at all and wind up with nothing when he signs somewhere else. They were talking yesterday on MLB Network about a potential Cubs trade with Manny going there and us getting Russell, Almora Jr. and Montgomery. I'd take that and be happy.

That would be a great trade. I'm not really expecting to much at this point in return for him. Maybe 1 A-level prospect and 1 B-level. Mostly because he really is a 1 year rental.

Peter has to stink his views in on this and will not trade with him. I don't understand.

Because Peter seems to think that they have to try to compete every season to put butts in the seats. I think that the fans realize that this year isn't going to be a year we're going to be competing for the division and should try at least a small rebuild. That starts by trading Manny. We unfortunately couldn't get the Britton trade to Houston done and now Britton's value will be almost nothing this upcoming trade deadline with his injury causing him to miss around half the season. I'm used to this organization usually doing the dumbest thing possible in these types of situations. Not looking forward at all to this 2018 season and beyond if they don't start getting their shit straight.

it want shock me to see castro or the rule v guys as 2 starters . while tilly will be no 3 . i look forward to 18 watch sisco hays and boom boom . if not for stupid trades we would have a decent home grown rotation . i would start hunter out slow building him as a starter at bowie 2 inn a month per start then 3 and so on .

You have more optimism about the upcoming season than I do. It's likely going to be another season of having to score at least 6-7 runs on most nights just to have a chance. And with the way the offense can go into dry spells at a moments notice, I'm not liking the chances. I think we'll be fighting Tampa Bay for the bottom of the division with the way it looks now. As for Sisco, it's not even guaranteed that he'll be on the opening day roster since it's been rumored that the Orioles are looking for a veteran catcher.
I do agree about Hunter Harvey though. Let him stay in Bowie or Norfolk this season if he starts doing well. No need to rush him or overextend him.

the last thing i want is long term deals for a pitcher in fa . mix and match with the youngster to find our future ace . i like hess , long , sedlock , akin and yaco . cortes will be a starter from the yankees . so tilly 3 cortes 4 castro 5 ? we have others if they falter wright has starter stuff if he can get it together . as far as sisco he is ready they looking for cheap catchers for comp with caleb . sisco falters or struggles bring wynns on .

cortes isn't apower arm he is a crafty lefty no way he is as bad as ours last year . i can see both gausman and bundy having great years . i would love to lock them up with schoop . btw brach is better and wears down and may zack will be back . our bp will be great again .

I know he was rumored to come back here.

The White Sox have officially agreed to a one-year deal with free agent righty Miguel Gonzalez, as Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic first reported (via Twitter). He’ll receive a $4.75MM salary, the team announced (and as Chris Cotillo of SB Nation tweeted). Outfielder Jacob May was designated for assignment to open a roster spot.

Only if he plays CF. Otherwise, he is of no use. Time for Adam Jones to move over because he is no longer capable of patrolling CF as Dyson can. Otherwise, pass on Dyson and sign Cargo on a 1 yr deal to play RF.
Dyson isn't someone that really interests me. I agree with you and think CarGo would be good on a one year deal.

Well, why not go all in this year before Manny leaves? Sign JD Martinez to a 1 yr 16M deal, sign 1 top FA pitcher to a 1 year 22M deal and fill in the blanks. Perhaps at the All Star break your dead even but in the race.

I really wish the Orioles would bring Arrieta and Tillman back...Bundy/Gausman/Arrieta/Tillman would be a nice 1-4.

I wouldn't mind that but unfortunately Angelos isn't going to come close to what Jake wants in both years and salary. Tillman though I think can be had at a decent price.
