What do we expect would be heading back to the Bucs in a McCutchen deal? Beede plus? Why deal a prospect for a rental? Even if said prospect isn’t exactly an A prospect any more...

i have no idea why the fo would even consider mccutchen. if we had a stacked outfield of young players and needed a vet 4th presence - maybe. but a 1 year deal for a 2018 mccutchen????

now if it was the the 2012 andrew... i'd be all over it

Cutch just doesn't make much sense to me, given what we know about the Giants' intentions which are:

A. get under luxury tax to reset the counter (penalties get stiff for repeat offenders)

B. Hang onto as many prospects as possible

C. Improve OF defense

D. Improve power

Cutch achieves just one of those, perhaps two if the Pirates eat salary.

The problem is the Pirates have no real incentive to eat salary on a 1-year contract. It would take a bigger haul of prospects to get them to do that. It also doesn't make sense to send someone like Pence (if he'd agree in the first place which is doubtful) because the point of the Pirates in trading McCutchen is to clear salary and get prospects.

On top of that Cutch isn't a good defender in CF anymore. I don't anticipate he'd willingly move to LF or RF for an unproven player (Duggar). On a contract year he's going to want to play CF for his value.

I just don't see a fit here unless the Giants get really crafty. If they somehow acquire him while not giving up their best prospects and stay under the tax than I'd probably be okay with it. That lineup would be interesting actually. I just don't see how they can do it.... unless Melancon, Dyson or Strickland are going somewhere. Pirates don't want 'em though.

TBH Sam Dyson probably should have been traded yesterday. That may be the Giants' ticket in all this.
If only the Giants' FO would consider your points.

Adding Cutch into the current situation why staying under the tax would certainly require a Beede or Shaw, or maybe a Duggar+Suarez.

If they make a separate move to clear salary (trading Dyson), I think it still might take a top-10.

I've seen an opposite take to Pavs' that makes some sense. The Pirates have been lambasted for their return for Cole, and Cole wasn't as beloved as Cutch. Might not want to take another PR hit and just dump Cutch.

Well those points were pulled directly from Evans and Sabes' quotes. They aren't going to lay out all their plans, but I doubt they're straight up lying.

I'm thinking (hoping) that they checked in on Cutch, but aren't actively perusing him. The rumors are persisting because this offseason is so dull.

I mean in theory he's a nice player. Would have easily been our best offensive player last year. He's a big bat that is available on the market, it would be unfortunate if the front office DIDN'T consider him because guys like Cutch don't become available that often.

The fit is clear from a pure on the field standpoint. But the number of hurdles to get there is where the deal falls apart obviously.

It does sound like Cain could become a possibility. Surrendering two draft picks and signing a speed guy in his 30s to a long term deal makes me nervous.

Shut your big fat mouth.

This can’t happen. It just can’t.

The exact return heading back to Pittsburgh remains unknown, though none of Chris Shaw, Tyler Beede or Heliot Ramos are in the trade (all Twitter links via MLB.com’s Jon Morosi, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic, and Jorge Castillo of the Washington Post). A big leaguer could be headed back to the Pirates as part of the return, per Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area (on Twitter), though he notes that the Major Leaguer wouldn’t be a huge piece of the deal. Baggarly tweets that Joe Panik is not going to Pittsburgh — crossing another name off the list. Brewers Sign Ji-Man Choi To Minor League Deal

It sounds like the Giants have Cutch pencilled in for LF and the #2 slot in the lineup.
Spitballing here. I JUST heard about this deal...

Panik 2B
McCutchen LF
Posey C
Longoria 3B
Hunter McParker RF
Belt 1B
Crawford SS
Duggar CF

Maybe Slater factors into the starting OF picture a show well.

There is still yacking going on that we might scoop Cain too, then it would probably be...

Panik
Cutch
Posey
Cain
Longo
Hunter/Parker
Belt
Crawford

The names I've heard going to Pittsburgh is Kyle Crick and Bryan Reynolds. If that's it, then this trade isn't so bad. Hopefully McCutchen really is okay with a move to left field and his bat shows up again in 2018.

If Cain really does get signed (and I'm with cal on this, please no) then I'd think this lineup would be more likely:

Cain
Panik
Posey
McCutchen
Belt
Longoria
Crawford
Whoever plays right field

I'm thinking he ends up in RF, with Herk to LF.
