Critics love Rian Johnson so a lot of them were already predisposed to give him good marks. If you read many of their reviews, you'll see most are giving him praise simply for the act of taking risks and making changes without ever really thinking about if those risks/changes make sense or are worth it.

The fan score is a couple of things. Some of it is a bunch of butthurt fanboy trolls purposely driving the score down because the movie wasn't 100% how they would have done it. But there's a ton of others that are just giving the movie 7/10s which is still a solid score, they just actually take the time to see the holes in a lot of those risks/changes Johnson took that the critics glossed over.

Agreed, it's almost like they are recycling some storylines/ideas from the original trilogy

Yup. And even the deviations aren't really that creative or interesting, for the most part at least. There has been some cool stuff but the cool stuff are just brief moments here and there and aren't really what define the story.

I agree. This film had a couple of moments that stood out, but not that many of them. I'd equate it to The Godfather Part III; it had a couple of what I'd call "good Godfather moments" in it that were offset by lots of filler.

Good, solid movie. Probably not worthy of the ridiculous critical acclaim, but still good.

"Ridiculous critical acclaim" sounds about right. I think those critics who went out of their way to heap praise on the movie were afraid to dump on a movie that went all-in on diversifying its cast and then failed to put those characters to good use.

Lol, that's awesome. For the longest time, Blood Diamond (4.5/5 stars) had the largest critic/audience disparity I was aware of. 62% from critics, 90% from audience. But Bright, and now the new Star Wars, blow it out of the water (at least in terms of movies with an adequate number of reviews from each).

I don't really "trust" one over the other, and they're usually right around each other. Besides, I sometimes enjoy watching low-rated movies, since I maintain that all movies are enjoyed subjectively.

It's probably not all that unusual to see that for "mass appeal/crowd pleaser" movies. Critics have trashed many of those... or for critics to love yet audience hate an arty movie. But for critics to love a mass appeal/crowd pleaser, but audience not ? That's really unusual.

I'm not a big fan. I'll catch it in a year or 2 when I can watch it at home to see what the fuss is about. Negative word of mouth sure isn't stopping people from paying to see it.

I think its more they didn't want to be the person to shit on Star Wars when its comes out. They all loved The Force Awakens when it came out to but if you talk to many of them today, they're all "Meh movie. Totally redundant. It just redid A New Hope, no new ideas. 5/10"

I don’t disagree, but the difference in this case, 60%, seems pretty remarkable.

Bright is on Netflix.

Its commonplace for video game reviews.

Star Wars is bigger than movies. If it was just a movie, people would like it imo.

Isn't Force Awakens a carbon copy of 4?

Yes and no. I felt like it was different enough up until the point of the Starkiller base, which played out almost exactly like the Death Star. It was just a Death Star on steroids. In retrospect, they really should have just came up with something else. The rest of the movie is fine.

I like that they introduced non-Jedi, non-Sith Force users. That concept had existed in the cartoons, but never really examined in the live action universe.

I also like that they personalized the Storm Troopers. Lots of room there for stories.

But just about everything else was cut and paste from New Hope.

The theme of an isolated young person getting caught up in the rebellion only to find that they have some type of strong Jedi power within them leading them to become a "Jedi" to fight the Dark Forces is definitely part of each story. The same with a wise and worn Jedi master to "teach" them.

In this case Rey vs Luke. Luke vs Obi-wan and Yoda

Obligatory cabana/casino/bar scene. Check.

Ok. I still liked it. :D I think of it as a classic archetypal story repeated time and again throughout literature.

The Death Star idea is on this 3rd, 4th, 5th run now??

I still liked it.

Actually Luke is more a Yoda equivalent while Han is the Obiwon substitute and Fin = Han.

But don’t get me wrong. Just because I acknowledge the remake status doesn’t mean I didn’t like it. Given the state of the franchise at the time, I think it was a good plan.

I don't know. I think Han was still Han for both Luke and Rey. Cynical skeptic while quietly admiring and liking them. :)

Yeah. reboots can be good. Batman, Star Trek have all done well with reboots.

The Star Trek reboot was a big FU to trekkies everywhere. Please don’t compare TFA to that piece of shit.

Really? LOL. Sometimes fans get too thin skinned about things

I think the whole movie series needed a serious reboot. Remember Star Trek:Nemesis? (Yeah me neither)

Really liked Pine as Kirk and loved the back story on him

Liked the New Scotty a good deal as well. And McCoy was outrageously good.

I could see people getting upset about Spock with the Uhuru thing (although babeish she was)

The critics had it right the first time with Oz. Fuck that movie
