There are rumors circulating that J.D. Martinez has agreed in principal to sign a 5 year contract with the Red Sox. The Sox don't want to announce anything until they can make a trade or two. The biggest chip in those trade talks is Jackie Bradley Jr. Several teams have supposedly shown more than a passing interest and there's also some gossip that there could be a huge deal with Bradley and David Price being dealt together. No other team has been mentioned but the "speculation" is that it could be one of three teams.....Mets, White Sox or Cubs. No other players have been mentioned and I wouldn't want to try to evenguess what's going on.

Anyone hear anything??

Why would anyone trade for David Price and his contract unless the Red Sox are paying A LOT of his remaining contract and/or they're attaching someone really good with him?? And in my opinion it would need to be someone a lot better than Jackie Bradley, Jr. Unless they're simply paying so much of Price's contract to make it worthwhile.

I thought I had heard that he had signed a contract. Boston radio is getting a bit wacko. I think they do this stuff to get people riled up and thinking that huge things are in the making.

Last few weeks have been awful with IT coming back and being an asshole about a tribute that ws going to happen and somehow got it cancelled. Then Paul Pierce was pissed because IT wanted his tribute on with Paul's.

While that's going on, the Patriots are being dis-assembled by the media a week before their first playoff game.

I think I'll just stay out of it until something's official.

Gee, ya think? Sports radio in general is crap and full of people trying to rile up fanbases. Boston/NE sports radio is no exception.

Yeah the media in general just sucks period! They want to scare everyone! However, they couldn't sign Betts (yet). Then again just because they signed JBJ doesn't mean they'll keep him I guess.

Every year it's the same thing come play-off time and that's why I try not to listen to the media.

makes no sense to sign JD and trade JBJ.

Keep the awesome OF D in tact and make him DH.

This. If JBJ's bat rebounds to 2015-16 levels I'm not sure Martinez would represent that much of an improvement over Bradley, if at all. Jackie was a 5 WAR outfielder in 2016 and put up 2.5 in just 74 games in 2015. JD's career high is 5 in 2015, though he did put up 4.0 in 2014 and 3.8 in 2017 despite missing 1/4 of the season. Martinez will be a much better hitter regardless, but JBJ is a much better fielder and baserunner. Not to mention I think the great outfield defense is a real boon to the pitching staff, I'd rather not break that up.

I still think Santana would have been the best FA signing for the Sox.

Betts wouldn't take $6.5M. He wants $10.3M.

I would’ve loved Santana. Frankly they’re over the tax almost no matter what thanks to the dead weight. They could’ve signed Santana and jd

Well I guess the rumors were correct, 5 years and it didn't cost JBJ. This was critical, they just could not go into the season with the lineup from last year and expect to compete with NY.

They could've had some serious bounceback as basically no hitter lived up to expectations besides one half of their C platoon and Moreland.

But getting a bigger bat certainly helps, and should help them clear the books faster.

Boston is going to be fascinating to watch the next 2 years, both in-season and the off-season. so much money flying in and out.

Their pitching should be better than NY's as well so this race should be fun to wach.

They had a ton of off years for sure but they clearly were missing that big bat in the 4 spot. Kind of surprised this happened this late and for this money. But he does have an out after next season so this may be a 2 year deal.

Boston's current window is 2 years.

In the next 2 years the following guys hit FA:

Pomeranz (after 2018)
Kimbrel
Hanley (hopefully 2018, if not 19)
Panda (19...his money blows)
Sale (19)
Porcello (19)
Bogaerts (19)
Moreland (19)
Holt (19)
Thornburg (19)

that's a lot of talent and money off the books.

Having Panda and Handley coming off the same time a few must res-signs are up is probably a good thing. I was one of the few fans who liked the Kimbrel trade. Like a goalie in hockey there are very few teams that make deep playoff runs without an established closer. Ask the Nats how it works out without one.

yeah, it seems their value is increased in october, part of that is they're used more.

Baseball Prospectus did a study about 10 years ago now about playoff success.

the 3 that correlated the most to playoff success were:

Pitching staff K rate (%)
team defense (FRAA)
a good closer (WXRL)

here's a link: Lies, Damned Lies: Secret Sauce - Baseball Prospectus

the other intersting stat is that in recent years the team with the higher contact rate on offense has won a significant amount.

tip of the cap to Joe Sheehan's mailing list for that one.

Yeah I think we can all see that. But I tell you what, after watching the Red Sox play for 40 years it was pretty hard to take watching the "heart of the order" full of .270 hitters with no power. That was downright disheartening, wasn't used to that.

yeah, it wasn't normal business as usual, that's for sure.
