Firing Bevell could make things even more interesting in Seattle

Consider last week’s remarks from receiver Doug Baldwin regarding the issues with the offense: “I can’t say it. My job is to protect the team right now, and I’m doing a poor job of that. How can I say this? It’s not playcalling. It’s not playcalling. We go into a game knowing what the defense is going to give us, the situations we’re going to be in. We don’t execute as a team. Offensively, that’s what we’ve seen countless time and time again that we do not execute the way we should. And that’s on us as players. You guys can blame Bev all you want to, but the truth of the matter us, Bev is not the problem. Probably already said too much.”

He said even more during a game late in the 2017 season, when NFL Films caught him saying on the sideline, “I’m team player, I don’t want to be an asshole, but I need the f–king ball!

So if Bevell isn’t the issue, who was Baldwin talking about? Given Baldwin’s clear frustration with not getting the ball, it’s possible that Baldwin is talking about quarterback Russell Wilson.

There’s a perception that Wilson does too much offensively because he has to. Maybe what Baldwin reluctantly was saying last week is that Wilson does too much because he wants to. Without knowing the plays that were called and the ensuing assignments to the various players, it’s impossible to know whether Wilson is or isn’t going through his progression or whether Wilson is or isn’t bailing on the play that was called and improvising. But it’s possible that Wilson is the one Baldwin is talking about when he talks about players not executing.

Wilson, for whatever reason, has been the target of plenty of resentment within the locker room. The heavy praise heaped on Wilson this year, with the not-so-subtle message that Wilson is doing it all alone, surely hasn’t made things better.

The question now is whether the firing of Bevell will make it worse.

Ultimately, it may hinge on who the next coordinator will be, and whether that person will be viewed as someone who is there to cater to Wilson or to coach him hard.

Some of this makes sense. The Sea Oline is bad...but there are many times in which Wilson makes it worse. He's a 1-read QB, and for the most part, if it's not there, he goes into scramble-mode. His great attribute is that unlike most anyone else, he keeps his eyes up, downfield looking for targets whereas the norm is head down, looking to run the ball.

I guess he'd better not kneel for the anthem.....

James Carpenter played well for the Jets
Breno Giacomini was a fine RG even after his Seattle tenure
Max Unger is still the starting C for a team in the NFC Divisional round
Duane Brown is here now

It's not the drafting or the recognition. It's the coaching. These guys are regressing in the current system and it's clear to see from those who watch them regularly. Money has been thrown at the Oline, but the extension contract after the rookie deals are not being offered because the players are not being developed. Great prospects like Ryan Ramczyk are being passed over and guys who haven't played Tackle since middle school like George Fant are being forced in playing Left Tackle for a perennial NFL playoff team.

What there seems broken to you?

I'd throw in Jesse Davis there too. Seattle picked him up as an undrafted free agent. Cable is supposedly really good at finding a way to make guys work, moving them around the line, and coaching them up. Davis looked like garbage at tackle for Seattle in the preseason. Dude is now a starting guard in Miami. Granted, he's no All-Pro but he grades out better than Pocic and about the same as Joekel according to PFF and would have cost way less than either one to keep around.

Exactly. Nobody seems to want to mention the awful route trees the WR's were running under Bevell that had Wilson dancing around back there like Fred Astaire. Worst Oline in the league and Bevell has the receivers running the longest developing routes ever. Makes sense. So much so, he finally got fired.

If he wants to argue that sometimes Wilson goes into scramble mode too early, then I'll agree. One read? Uh-huh.

But nope, not getting caught up in the Bevell nonsense. Could a new OC do a better job? Sure. Depends on whom they hire.

Huh? He's done jack shit it seems with the O-Line. Ifedi is one of the biggest busts in the league, Moffit basically quit, Carpenter didn't play well until he left, Guacamole was mediocre at best, Okung/Unger were HERE before Cable even arrived and were the only decent things on the line before they ran into injuries. And Ethan Pocic looked like absolute shit who is some jack of all trades lineman which means he's raw and inexperienced. Whatever.

So some guy is starting for Miami now that we let go? Why the fuck didn't we keep him? Same as Jahri Evans who played great for NO in 16' and was serviceable for GB in 17'. We picked him up CHEAP and then let him go too.

Dude fuck Tom Cable. That guy has been a useless bag of horseshit since he arrived. Oh great, it took you 2 fucking full years to figure it out with Britt who is now just AVERAGE (according to PFF). Whatever.

If Seattle puts Tom Cable at OC I'm not expecting much if anything out of the O next year, which means we'll prob. end 7-9 if Arizona finds a competent QB given we need desperate roster turnover on defense (guys are injured too much, getting older) and have no draft picks.

Unger for Graham has come back to haunt them badly

Agreed, Graham has his good moments, but the guy is a big receiver more than a true TE, he can't block worth a dam.. We should a just kept Unger looking back.... But we also should a kept Golden Tate over Percy, one was a durable reliable receiver, the other was a super athlete that couldn't stay on the field EVER....

The interesting question with Wilson is does he REALLY make the guys around him better or is he only really relying on himself and his own skills to get things done.

Because as a 9er fan I did see Jimmy G take the same group of guys that stunk and make those guys productive. And mind you it wasn't an amazing group around him.

Wilson does have holes in his game that tend to get overshadowed by all of his "How in the world did he do that?" highlight reel kind of plays.

I don't think he's special from the pocket and just above average from there. He's never been a guy that drops back and just dices up a defense with surgical quick passes. I don't think he's a one read guy or anything but I do think he prefers to move around and probably chooses that option too quickly.

My opinion on Bevell is that he wasn't completely the problem but wasn't completely the solution either. I don't think he could take lesser talent and get them to overachieve through scheme.

Well to be somewhat fair they let him go because he looked really bad in his brief playing time in Seattle. But Davis was just the kind of guy that Cable likes and is supposedly good at finding a place for. Big physical fucker who is a converted DT.

Turned out that decent coaching and a position change was all this guy needed to be an okay starting lineman.

No arguing that, but they also dumped their O Line coach and the OC
Hadn't heard that yet. Glad to see they finally want to make changes. Would have been a shame if they failed to build a team around a talent like Rodgers. Hopefully they get all the right pieces in place before the window closes.

Statistically, that's not true. He's been a top 10 QB in most statistical categories the last three years when passing inside the pocket. He is however the most pressured QB in the league and tends to get flushed out early and often. Admittedly, there are instances where I think he panics too early and runs out when there isn't pressure.

I heard Wilson best summarized:
Few in the game have ever been better at making something out of nothing,

But he also might be the worst in the league at making nothing out of something.

Both are true. We do not know what he would be like with a more stable line and some better options at receiver, but he's less than perfect with what he does have now, even if he does put up crazy highlights and does things in scrambles few can.

Embattled OC Darrell Bevell out according to reports.

Just made a whole lot of the fan base very happy.

Now if Cable is able to share a ride out of town that'd be great.
Bevell's stupid call at the goal line cost the Seahawks a sure SB win over the Patriots. He should have been fired then.
