Figured we could have a thread just for the coaching carousel with the Hawks org... So many people want to gut the entire coaching staff, some want half of them gone, some want minor tweaks, etc...

Looks like Kris Richard will be interviewing with the Indianapolis Colts...

Yeah, hard to tell if he's just a Rooney Rule box check or a true candidate. I've also heard Cable being mentioned with the same job. Early reports are the most inaccurate though.

I'll be interested to see how Gruden goes about filling his staff in Oakland. It's not like he's moving over from another HC job and can just take assistants with him.

That's a great point regards to Gruden needing to fill his staff... Cable was a Raider, too..

I am always resistant to firing coaches unless there is really no other recourse.

But I do feel it is time to let Cable go. The OL simply has not improved. And it is not for lack of trying to improve it.

I read the colts have more established candidates, ill be surprised if they take richard. If they take cable by some miracle it would be huge for us.

On Richard, for some reason he looks to me like a guy who may drop down to college and take a HC job there at maybe a smaller program to build his resume a bit for an NFL job. He's young enough to go down there for 4 or 5 years and still come back and coach in the NFL for a long time. I dunno, just a stab.

Not a coach, but the Schneider to GB story will be interesting to follow. Clayton seems to think it can't/won't happen because he left that clause out of his new contract, but there's always room for negotiation. JS may love it here and may love working with PC, but if it's his dream job then that's gonna be tough to beat. If GB wants him bad enough to offer compensation, then this thing could pick up some serious steam.

They would trade draft picks for a gm? Has that ever happened before?

I can't think of one. But there was also a time when no team had ever traded draft picks for a coach. Now it appears the Raiders even want to one-up that and offer part ownership for a coaching hire.

Can't imagine that GB is going to pay him what the Seahawks pay him.

Richard is the only coach (with exception of Carroll) I'd keep. He did well with a defense that suffered SO many injuries and the complete lack of offensive production let alone a run game.

Cable/Bevell need to take a hike. We've given Cable PLENTY of offensive lineman to develop based on his wants of certain players and none are panning out. It took him what, 3 years before he finally figured out what to do with Britt. Ifedi looks God awful which means he's not getting coached properly on technique (he had ALL the physical tools), and he probably didn't want to keep Jahri Evans who played very well for the Saints in 16' and was average according to PFF in 17', but still produced nicely for Green Bay.

If Cable/Bevell stay this year, I'm not counting on us doing ANYTHING of substance. I feel if that happens you might as well just gut everyone but Wilson/Wagner because every other vet can't stand them (and show it) and our offensive lineman will continue just going, 'derp derp' with the BRILLIANT guidance from Tom Useless Cable.

I know plenty of people hate Bevell, but in my opinion he's running the offense how PC wants it. It's been productive more than it hasn't, but that's about as much effort as I'll give to argue against the haters...I know it's a waste of time. Cable is the one who needs to go. Three things that for me are prohibitive to him staying in the organization for 2018:

1. More draft picks invested in OL than any other organization over the past handful of years, to include early draft picks such as Okung, Ifedi, Carpenter, Moffit, Odhiambo, and Britt. We've traded for pro bowl LT Brown. Brought in some mid level FAs and made a couple other trades last off-season. All that, and the line play has become worse and not better. It's just not working.

2. "College isn't producing OL talent like it used to." It's not the exact quote from Cable, but the sentiment is the same. I think that's a defeatist attitude. Other teams are finding the talent, while we have continued to try DTs at Guard and power forwards & TEs at LT. I think we need to bring in someone focused on what is out there for us in the draft instead of what isn't. Other teams are figuring it out.

3. Alex Collins and Luke Joeckel. To me, these 2 players capture the failure of Cable better than any others. Collins couldn't even play well enough behind Cable's line to make the team, but then goes off to the Ravens and is immediately a productive starter. Some may say that's also on Bevell, but I think if it's as simple as calling a different play then we would have done that a long time ago. This line just cannot run block. Then there's Joeckel, who Cable said rated as the best guard in the NFL (or something close enough to that) before his injury that ended his last season in Jax. Either Cable has lost his eye for OL talent, or he's just taken the "best rated guard" from 2016, plopped him down next to a pro bowl LT, and somehow managed to make this line worse.

Cable probably still has a favorable reputation around the league as a smart line guy, so he likely won't be out of a job for long....but it's time for something different here. There's no salary cap for coaches, so either overpay to bring someone in from another team, or go down to the college ranks and find someone who wants to step up to the big leagues and get this thing going.

Well, they may not....but they may not have to. I think it's even something Schneider has said himself that GB is his dream job. If that's the case, he would probably take a little less. And if he's not willing to do that, then that's probably good news for us.

As far as schneider and carroll are concerned, how they rebuild this team will greatly determine their legacy.

Schneider can take the job now if its offered or take the risk that his cache takes a blow if they cant get this team back on track, and he never gets another shot at the gb gm job.

I can see Caldwell finding another HC job... I don't think he was the problem in Detroit...

All great reasons to back up your case... I agree with all 3 mainly 1 & 2...

We need to get the OL figured out and obviously Cable hasn't been able to do so with the surplus of investments he's inherited along the OL... We need to establish our running game... 9 of the top 10 rushing teams are in the postseason... I don't think that's a coincidence either... We were at the top of our game when we were able to run the ball...

I heard that as well. There's a question to be asked there, however. Are teams winning because they are running, or are they running because they are winning? Almost all teams run more to protect leads. If you're behind late, you're probably not running that much. The truth is probably in the middle. We certainly need to improve that part of our team, no question about that.

I would think multiple first rounders would be the cost of JS.

I'd be good with a 1st this year, 1st in '19 and a 2nd this year... Let's r*pe em if they want him that bad... Carroll is the one calling the shots on draft picks, no?

Mabye Schneider just got lucky with Sherman, Kam, Earl, KJ, Wagner, etc... He hasn't done it again since... Althought I really, really like the '17 draft class... I think they'll end up being something special...
