Well, the estimated cost of firing Dana and hiring new staff at the end of 2015 was about 15mm, Gibson was mentioned as a favorite (Lyons choice) to replace Dana should a move be made this year. This makes Gibson the HCIW should this '16 season prove to be a fluke. Lyons has a pro WVU contract to work with now if he wants/needs to make a move in a few years as far as the buyout (he didn't have that with Lucks terrible extension that handcuffed WVU) Now, he can potentially make a move, still have some stability, and save his employer a TON of money. But... No, he is terrible
You're right, he is terrible. He should have either cleaned house and taken the financial hit at the beginning or ride Dana until the end of 2017 and cut ties while bringing in his guy. No financial hit. Recruiting may have taken a hit in 2017 but not as much as it has now. Depending on that Elite coach you seem to think No Balls can bring in here, maybe there would be no hit.

You keep mentioning a pro WVU contract. I'm assuming you are talking about the buy out clause which is not uncommon. Charlie Strong is getting paid to sit on his ass for 2 years, but I'm sure the hit isn't as bad since he has taken, or getting ready to take, another HC gig.

The 247 rankings have us from 31-39 through those years currently 41. that lower rating ( which can still climb a lot depending on who else commits by signing day) can just as easily be attributed to Lonnie Galloway and his recruiting talents going to Louisville for a OCord position which he was not going to get under Dana. If Lonnie is still here does that ranking look a little better right now?? Prob so imho.
One thing Lyons DOES need to do right now is make absolutely sure that Dana is set up for success as far as coaching hires in the weaker areas (special teams) and nailing down the hires that so far look good (Wickline). He needs to have Dana's back and use any and all contacts and work with Dana to get the best guys around him that he can. I don't know that we have that right now.
Agree but how is he going to do that with his year to year contract mandate? Or, has the contract landscape already changed back to a multi-year contracts?

This was not based off of hatred for Eddie P, it was based off of your comments. I was curious when the Rifle team won their championships, before or during Eddie Ps reign? Gave you some extra nuggets during that time period and even gave Eddie P credit for hiring Marsha Bradley and provided kudos for her accomplishments.

Stop taking every response to your posts as a shot at you and read it for what it's worth. Maybe you can follow along and understand the post. One thing. Title IX was started in 1972. Did this mean that Eddie P did not plan for the what this was going to do to the college sports landscape where he all of sudden have to cut programs overnight in 1985?
Title 9 was STARTED in the early 1970s, just as was the EPA, both kept the target moving, with a patchwork of enforcement. Title 9 enforcement was ramped up in the early 2000s with lawsuits threatened .....

The uptick in recruiting after the 2011 season was due to a ten win season, BB, not because of a contract extension, and recruiting stepped back since due to poor performance on the field, winning brings in kids, not fine print on a contract........kids aren't stupid, with the short sight on both sides, the kids know it is a crap shoot whether the coach that recruited the will still be there when they graduate.

The 2016 recruiting class got off to a strong start, then one decommit after another... after another... occurred during the season when Shane failed to declare support for his head coach. You know... like the PSU AD did this fall? You know... the PSU team that lost two out of its first 4 games... one in embarrassing fashion to UofM? If not for Kyzir White and the Ferns kid committing late, last year's class would have ended up one of the worst of Dana's tenure.

This year's class has been compromised. Dana mentioned it in the article posted. We have but 13 high school seniors in the class. Enough said...

Next year's class will be hard to judge. As you know, coaches start recruiting kids when they're in the 9th/10th grade at times... and heavily recruit them as juniors in high school. These early relationships... and occasional offers... have been impacted negatively to date. Our staff has had to work extra hard to ward off the negative tactics of our recruiting rivals to earn the recruit's trust.

That is three classes. Last year's... this year's... and next year's...

Went back to find my post about Shane's impact on WVU recruiting. My memory ain't always so good these days, so I wanted to double check my rant last night....

Looks like my projection for the '18 class was off. Looks like the extension certainly has made a huge positive impact. Hopefully, this will be a trend that continues. I'm sure it's a whole lot easier going to underclassmen this spring with his extension and top rated class providing huge mojo.

A nice win over Utah wouldn't hurt either...

I would suggest a 10 win season has little if any impact. If it did why didn't RR have no better than a #25 recruiting class? Kids just don't read the W/L column. Its how the connect with the recruiter, playing time and if the Offense/Defense is something they want to play in as well as the reputation of whether the position coach can give them the best shot to be drafted or have the connections to get them into an NFL camp.

Dana gets the credit but imo the new assistant hires have been the biggest part of the recruiting bump. Dews, Belk and Caponi have been good on the recruiting trail. We got to get em All signed and on campus still but imo they found some really nice looking prospects.
Adding them and Spavital with who we already had has a chance of really planning out as far as getting talent, that’s why I want these guys nailed down for the next few years if possible. Give Dana and the staff every bit of help that we can and it’s looking like we have done that with these guys so far... now we have to keep em in place (except Mark Scott, we can get a special teams coach that can also recruit and be better off there imo) no more turnover unless guys are looking at promotions. None of this stuff of heading to USF for the same position, now THAT I put on Lyons, that should not be happening imo. Pay these guys and keep em here.

I disagree, I think the number one thing kids look at is being on a winning team, number two is probably playing time, and other factors are well down the list. How many four star kids came and sat on Ohio State's bench, rather than go and play at most other places? They wanted to say they were on the OSU team, a winning team. Those kids didn't care about lockers, weight rooms, NFL, who the asst coach was, what scheme was played. They wanted to be on that winning team. Fraud never ranked real high in recruiting for one reason, he had a system in place to use the two star kids with a great work ethic, Barwis to strengthen them, and schemed to use that talent. Fraud did not want those highly ranked 320 pound linemen, he wanted thinner, faster kids that ranked lower. The skill players he recruited and got were on par with anyone.

If you don’t think Rich wanted highly ranked recruits... you are a fucking fool.

He and his ego went to UofM to run his system with highly ranked recruits... to take everything to the next level... to test his scheme against better competition to cement his status as one of the elite college coaches.

Rich’s skill players were on par with anyone? Pat was a great running QB who executed the zone read nearly perfectly. It was all he could do.

Our WR’s were average at best. Was there a single WR drafted in the NFL other than Henry?

No doubt, Slaton and Devine were special.

Really? You think that's why Maryland has the #15 class in the country because of their winning tradition? Or NC State at #21, Kentucky at #23 Cal at #24 just to name a few?

Did you watch the bowl against Oklahoma? It was all Fraud WANTED him to do, when cut loose, he could pass pretty well.

Again, WR are not going to get big numbers when your play calls are 90% run or shovel passes.

Recruiting class rankings are just that, someone's opinion. 24/7 sports has our 2008 class, the one you guys say were all bare cupboard bums ranked 24 and 2018 ranked 21......
Slaton, if you are saying kids will want to play on a losing team because of a fancy locker, a coaches 7 year contract, a big scoreboard, or luxurious suites in the stands.........you have lost it....

Texas disagrees...

The rest of your post is too silly to respond to...

yet another well thought out response

Well... when I first thought of responding to this... “Did you watch the OU game? He passed pretty well.” I was like, he’s joking... right? Or, he’s trolling...

The Fiesta Bowl... White went 10-19. A little over 50% completion rate. He threw for 176 yds.

I didn’t want you to think I was picking on you again. I know how sensitive you are. But, those numbers are supposed to support your POV?

Pat worked really hard on the vertical tosses between his Jr and Sr seasons. It worked out so well for him, that Billy had to scrap his downfield passing game after the ECU beatdown. Of course... being the smartest coach in all the land, he announced to the media before the Colorado game that WVU was going back to playing WVU football. Letting everyone in the world in on the secret worked out so well that WVU went out to Boulder and lost to a pathetic Colorado team.

But, Pat could pass it pretty well....

I would say absolutely...a kid going to a school to play football on scholarship are beveling they have a shot at the pros..their dream since they were in POP WARNER and for the 4 and 5 star kids they more than likely believe they have a better shot than most...they are going to want to go to a school that is fully committed to the program and the strength of the Boosters of those schools tell the tale. A coach that is on a year to year ..or the hot seat is going to have difficulty in recruiting for the majority..making transfer a real possibility if your a recruit at some juncture during the kids time at the program..and that is a major pain in the ass for a kid.having to start over ..with the likelihood that he will have no guarantee he can transfer to a school that is going to get him playing time right away..

Man... I didn't even catch this stupid bullshit...

WVU's 2008 Class... the class of bare cupboard bums... was ranked by 247 at #49.

WVU's 2009 Class was ranked #24. No one argued that this class lead to a bare cupboard. In fact, Dana was able to maximize their contributions to earn an Orange Bowl berth and give WVU another BCS bowl win!

It was the pathetic 2010 class which had 15 enrollees... most of which didn't stay at WVU... that left the cupboard bare. Add to this... another terrible class in 2011 in which most didn't make it... nor stay.

No one can defend what happened under Billy...

Nor can they defend the hire to begin with. Bad/cheap/amateur hour move by WVU. When rival fan bases take shots at WVU saying things like " they are not big time and never will be", they are spot on when we (WVU) make moves like that one....as well as the Dana HCIW fiasco that followed TBH.

Agree with the HCIW fiasco. Luck was trying to give Billy a chance to make the right choice and simply resign following the disaster of the ‘10 season and move to the athletic department. Billy elected to stay on as HC... hoping all the dirt he could get from Colin Dunlap from the Pittsburgh PG would keep the Dana hire from happening.

It was beyond Embarassing...
