A lot of Rumors state that Hernandez will be traded. Probably to make room for Kingery or Crawford.
Hernandez is one of the 5 best 2nd baseman in the league. He has an obp of .373. he hits for average
and is solid in the field. A perfect lead off guy. I would prefer to keep him around until someone plays well enough to beat him out. Crawford seems to need more time to develop his hitting. Kingery does not have the arm to play 3rd base and so on. If the Philies put Caesar on the block there will be offers. The Angels have an
interest already. I would be pissed if the Phillies trade him before the season starts.

Cesar's .294/.373 is valuable to the Phils. I agree they shouldn't do anything yet until we know what we have in the JP and Kingery.

you guys really need to do homework or something. i don't know why you feel you're going to outsmart a GM.

one of hernandez' important features, aside from his obvious skill set, is that he's still somewhat cheap and under team control. even if the phillies had no infielders and were set on keeping him, he's not exactly someone you want to pay big money to eventually. he's going to be 28 and is in his prime right now. what you see now is easily the most damage he can do.

crawford was labeled a gold glove caliber player. and he absolutely showed that in his brief appearance last year, at every position. it was just 2 seasons ago, at age 25, that hernandez posted a .339 obp/.687 ops. and he did it with mediocre defense. crawford, at age 22, just posted a .356 obp/.656 ops with superb defense.

kingery is a high energy player who also plays superb defense. it doesn't matter whether he or crawford struggle, because their overall game features numerous components that will shine. guys (hernandez, franco, galvis) need to be moved. and hernandez is the one that can bring a legit return.

you're all simply fans of the team, wanting them to win as much as they can now, even if it's 75 games. that's not how any sport works.

He is under control for 3 more years. Since when is 28 considered old? Crawford has not proved that he can hit
in the majors. Kingery will probably be brought up in may next year. I am simply saying the Phillies should wait.
At least we know what we have with Caesar.

Glad you chimed in with your opinion. I don't think Galvis would be missed because of his poor hitting/OBP Franco bothers me because in his 3 years with the Phils, he's gone down from .280/.343 to .230/.281 and his power remained at 25 HR. At 25, I'd be reluctant to trade him w/o further efforts to fix his hitting even if it means a brief trip to AAA.

I've seen Kingery play and it does appear he has the rocket arm to play third if needed. JP showed he can handle both 3rd and short but his hitting worries me. It won't be an easy decision.

I can see it now. For Cesar, we get a journeyman utility guy, an average AA guy, and a player to be named later.
I believe the Phillies want pitching in return. Otherwise it would be pointless to trade him.

28 isn't old. it's a prime year like i was mentioning. where are the phillies going this year or the next that you feel the need to keep him when you could possibly get young pitching in return? are you going to keep him and sign him to a big deal in his 30s?

and what is going on in that time frame? are you giving kingery or crawford 5 minutes to prove how good they can be before showing them the door? it frequently takes years for players to develop, like hernandez himself. cesar is a +3 WAR type player.. and this is his peak. crawford might get that with his defense alone next year. kingery is a dustin pedroia type player with potential to double up hernandez' WAR.

regardless, there is no benefit to holding on to hernandez. he's not a part of that 5-10 year future block the phils are building. he's a player best used to acquire younger players, just like cole hamels was.

We're not on the same page. 5-10 year future block? I believe the team could make a big move in the standings within two-three years max, assuming the young SP staff matures along with the young lineup, and considering some fruitful trades. The FO believes that too. So, high OBP Cesar figures into that time frame, along with low avg, high OBP JP, and Kingery to complete the infield. It's too soon to dump Cesar and JP needs a further look.

OBP is the most important stat in baseball. IMO. Even more important for a leadoff man.

News from the winter meetings. Phillies have received inquiries about Galvis and Herrnandez. However they
may be willing to stick with the logjam and sort things out. Third base is a question mark and a backup 1st baseman may come into play if joseph is traded. (Left handed backup is 1st choice.) Also possible to use
Franco at 1st on part time basis. Nothing is certain at this point, and who knows what will happen in spring training. The saga continues.

I got no problem trading Galvis or Hernandez if they can get something decent for them. They are both likeable guys but I'd definitely move Galvis if someone wanted him - I'm confident in Crawford. Hernandez probably has more value so I wouldn't give him up just to rush Kingery to the majors but if they could get something useful in return I'd move him too. Not too worried about backup first baseman. I want Hoskins to play 160 games. I think they should get Knapp and/or Alfaro used to playing first base. For a catcher and spot starter at first base, Knapp seems like he's a decent hitter.

Alfaro may have a solid future at the plate. However with both catchers playing at the same time it could prevent someone pinch hitting or pinch running for them. We need a catcher available in case one gets hurt during the game.

That's where the resurrection of Todd Pratt comes into play.....

Pratt never played a full season in his career. He was good at getting on base. Pratt was one of my favorite bench players. 50 years old now. He needs his rest.

We don't need a full season from him. He's there for insurance when Alfaro and Knapp are in the same game
