I won a raffle for a new MacBook and they just asked me whether I want the 12" MacBook Retina or the 13" MacBook Air. I'm looking at specs and damn if I know which to choose.

Both would have 256GB storage. Will most likely go to my kid as he will be starting college next year.

Is it? I couldn't afford to buy one of the damn things myself, have to have it given to me.

doesn't he hate Apple?

Hell if I know. He should be able to compare specs either way though I'm thinking.

Probably the 12" if you can get the i7 processor and 16 gig memory. If it's the base models, whatever size you or he'd prefer.

I think what you are going to have to look at too is the USB ports. USB-C is the future, but I don't know how much of his stuff is still the old USB.

The Retina looks to have the newer USB technology.

Base models.

Seems like the 12" has the newer technology. The USB-C port means we'd have to get an adapter for USB-A stuff. Not sure how much USB-C is going to be used in the future.

I personally probably would prefer additional ports over just one that is the newer tech. I've never really concerned myself with having the best/latest usb technology, but have always appreciated having extra ports.

He doesn't really have much in the way of peripherals right now. About the only think I can think of right now is if he was in class and wanted to charge his phone.

Most colleges give you cloud storage, so you really aren't dealing with memory sticks and shit..

man, I remember getting to college and having an entire network so I could access my files from anywhere and access anyone else's stuff.

One dude had really good **** in his files. It was really nice of him to share like that.

Yeah, he's already using Google Drive to save his comp sci projects so he doesn't have to worry about a stick.

But 256G isn't a ton of storage space so a regular USB for an external HD would be nice. Though I don't know if that would really affect him. That's probably more thinking of myself with all the pictures I take.

I went with the Air mainly because of the ports and the longer battery life. When I get it I might see if I can take it to a store and exchange it. If they will give me the full price for this one I could pay a couple hundred and get a Pro.

depends on how much you value screen size.

And if you want to buy fucking dongles for the one on the left only having a usb-c port.

The 12 inch is obviously a better machine... but really in many ways, I still prefer my 17" MacBook Pro over my shiny new 15" just for the screen size. So what if it weighs 5 pounds... that 17" anti-glare screen is still damn good.

Best thing comparatively between the old and new models is the oversized force touch trackpad.

After getting a computer with a retina screen, looking at Macs without it is like looking at a gameboy.
