Clearly they were, you know, because a true number 1 team wouldn't get curb stomped in the NCG, and a true number 2 wouldn't get blown out in the Rose Bowl.

(They were down 14-0). Tressel in the first 10 minutes had already determined that they
were in way over their heads. Either they hadn't prepared properly for UF. They underestimated
them and left things out of their preparation, or UF was far the superior team.

Tressel knew if he punted, they would march right on down the field and score. He knew he needed
some momentum or he was fixin' to get run out of there. They didn't make it and the
rout was on.

They were ranked number 1, but they weren't the best team by any stretch of the imagination, and it's a damn shame that Florida and USC couldn't have played to determine the real championship.
