Report is that he needs a 3rd back surgery and will miss the rest of the season.

Per Schefter: Eifert elected to do the back surgery. Done for '17.

At this point, the guy needs to hang em up. This is his 3rd back surgery, in addition to ankle and shoulder surgeries, and a few concussions.

I do feel bad for the guy. He's a superb player when he actually is able to suit up. Shame it couldn't work out for him.

And think about this:

Eifert and Margus Hunt were both drafted in 2013. Hunt has more games played than Eifert.

I wonder what this will mean for his next deal. I would figure the most a team would offer is a 'prove it' type of deal without much guaranteed money. Unless he somehow feels attached to the Bengals rehab guys I would figure he will want to continue his career somewhere else. Too much bad juju for him here.

Oh, and I know we used to laugh and joke about the Bengals rehab team that was first here under Lewis, but over the last few years players have been raving about the changes that were made.

For Tyler Kroft, this is his chance to get a pretty big payday. If he continues to have a good season, he can sign a long term deal in the offseason that's both favorable to him and the team. As it stands, he's only scheduled to make another 720K next season. I would figure he and his agent would jump at the chance to get him a new contract for 'starter' money.

Just not as good and played about 1/10 as much
Since 2013, Eifert's rookie year, Gronk has played in 10 more games than Eifert. While that is nearly 2/3 of a season, it's not as much as you'd think.

But, yeah....he's been brittle. Sucks, but it is what it is.

Well, his best ability is availability. Something Eifert doesn't have.

He's made an impact since the change in coordinator. As long as Boyd is busy getting high or nursing a knee injury, I'd like to see Kroft step up as a third down guy.

Kroft looks like a suitable replacement for Eifert. Another red zone weapon. Amazing how firing a hack like Zampese has opened up the whole offense.

Eif is a FA after this season ending injury.

we'll see him again as he becomes the backup TE for the Ravens. They'll save him for games vs CIN and playoffs, he will legally change his name to "Dennis Pitta" just to mess with us.
