Demar Derozan - Also too low. No way he should be below Bledsoe or Middleton right now.

Don't think he will be the happiest camper when he see his ESPN ranking after he had this response to his SI ranking

Lonzo at 63 is insane too

A rookie that cant shoot and cant play D.

Yes- his passing could be Kidd-like- but not anytime soon. Better than Melo for this upcoming year? thats just ridiculous

Perfect description of Wiggy.
hey- i just quoted the article -- i didnt make up the stats they cited saying the Heats d is better with Whiteside riding the pine the last 3 years than with him on the floor.

that is one of the worst...easily....his SI ranking. Unbeleivable to me.

I know the mid-range game is de-valued in todays league- but the guy is a multi time all star and has helped his team win multiple playoff series over the last couple years.

Lonzo at 63 is OK. Melo at 64 isn't. Melo is top 30 if not top 20.

hey- i just quoted the article -- i didnt make up the stats they cited saying the Heats d is better with Whiteside riding the pine the last 3 years than with him on the floor.

It is just a stupid stat because there is a lot of factors to take into consideration. 2 of the Heat best defenders come off the bench. Just terrible reporting as always. Basketball is a team sport. One person doesn't make or break a defense. To dig deeper into those stats I just would love to see the lineups that Whiteside played the most minutes with and would love to see the 5 players who were usually out there when Whiteside was on the bench. I could almost bet money it was a much better defensive group. The Heat starting lineup included Dragic and Babbitt. Both are not good defenders. Also another thing is they didn't even provide #'s. For all you know the Heat DEF EFF could have been at 103.8 with Whiteside on the bench and 104.2 with him on the floor. Very small difference.

At the end of the day, the heat finished top 5 in DEF EFF last year and since Hassan been in Miami, the defense improved every year. They went from 19 in 2015, 7th in 2016, & 5th this past season. Whiteside avg bout 33 MPG last year. If the team was so bad on defense with him on the court then no way would they finish 5th in DEF EFF, 5th in OPP PPG, 7th in OPP FG%, & 3rd in OPP 3PT %. They would be much closer to middle of the pack. It is just really lazy reporting. Put some actual #'s on that statement to show us how small or big the difference is. They would never do that though because the difference is very small. Trust me no way the Heat finish top 5 in a shit load of important defensive statistics if they were such a bad defensive team 33 out of 48 minutes nightly last year.

He's not that high, but 30 isn't out of the question. Definitely top 40. He's ranked easily 25 spots too low.

37th is much more accurate. I would say he's more between 25-35. 64 was like spitting in his face

I have him around 35 too. Still a game changing talent. The problem is always building around him. It makes the options limited because of his game.

o i totally agree- it is not near a perfect stat---- just about ALL the basketball advanced stats have drawbacks and holes in them and are subject to debate---- these stats are created by people a lot smarter than you or me trying to encapsulate performance.

I think they are helpful- but they are definitely open to debate--- however--- when one of those stats consistently says something, year after year, there probably has to be some kind of logical reasoning behind it.

Here's what you're looking for

NBA.com/Stats | Lineups Advanced

Heat Def Rtg was 106.5 (5th in the NBA) last year. Sorting by Def Rtg and filtering minutes played (40 seemed reasonable, just a guess), Whiteside is featured in 9 line ups that all post def rtg better than the team average. He is also featured in the 5 man line ups that the Heat played the most (247 minutes) and that lineups defensive rating hovers right around the team average of 106.

The point? Whiteside is vital to the defensive success of the Miami Heat.
