Steve Simmons is sounding awfully bitter that no one wanted him to work for The Athletic. I'll quote it so that you don't have to click him.

I’m old enough to remember The National, the great American attempt at being a superstar all-sports newspaper. A lot of friends worked for The National.

I started to think about it the other day after a career-long friend, Eric Duhatschek, the exceptional hockey writer, went to work for The Athletic, the rather new pay-for online sports service.

In a very short time, The Athletic has hired some of the largest names in sports media in both the U.S. and Canada. Ken Rosenthal, the baseball reporter, signed on. Pierre LeBrun, the TSN hockey insider, signed on. Jeff Pearlman, the famed author, signed on. The list of signings is long and impressive.

And expensive.

Those of us in this struggling industry today want nothing more than to see new ventures succeed. The more jobs available, the better it is for the industry. But I worry about The Athletic because I know about The National.

The National went too fast, too expensive, paid too much for big-name writers, and big-name editors like the late Frank Deford, and it folded 18 months after first publishing in 1990.

I hope The Athletic survives and thrives. But the math worries me. It’s subscriber-based only. There’s a lot of large salaries to pay. Here’s hoping they find a way to achieve the success The National, run by brilliant journalists, could not.

There are a few things to say here, but the obvious one is that The National was a physical newspaper while The Athletic is a website. There are some differences in the two business models and a lot of the problems that The National had were related to those differences (no delivery service and general distribution problems, difficulty with printing and deadlines etc.).

I also like how Steve talks up Frank Deford, as if hiring a weekly magazine writer to be a daily newspaper editor was a brilliant decision. Maybe he's hoping that someone will read that and want to hire a newspaper writer to be a website editor

Yeah, Steve Simmons is a terrible broadcaster. Don't blame The Athletic for not taking him on. As to Doughty, he's a good player but I get the feeling he may not be a King long term.

The problem with his entire argument is that other than Duhatschek all of the guys he names were let go from their previous publishing platforms. They probably aren't making anything near what they were at ESPN, Fox etc. and we don't know anything about Athletic's business structure.

Statistically Speaking: Projected Top 300 Scorers - Article - TSN

Quickies:

-Kane sans Panarin and with Saad likely to skate with Toews, I doubt he's getting anything close to that point total.

-Marchand is coming back down to earth.

-If Matthews skates even half the season with Marleau instead of Hyman he should crack PPG level no problem.

-Eichel should likewise be pushing PPG status.

-I'll be very disappointed if Marner regresses by 2 points. In fact, everything from 40-60 seems odd. Outside the top guys it seems like a very uninspired list where guys are projected based on their previous season's totals with no predictions on who might jump or regress.

I like how Jagr is going to score 44 while not even playing.

Kane's a talented player. He'll do well no matter who his line mates are.

Well? Sure. He's always good for 30 goals and a similar range in assists.

Top 3 scorers in the league? That's pretty tough to do when you're skating with a 3rd line C and what remains of Patrick Sharp.

Solid signing Devs fans Congrats.

Pretty surprised he got 6 years but the AAV could look real good if he continues to progress. He was our best defenseman at various times last year, hopefully consistency comes with age.

If he misses 15 games the Sens season is pretty much done, IMO. That is unless Thomas Chabot comes in and goes full Werenski in his rookie year.

I think Chabot has infinite potential but I don't think he's as NHL ready as Werenski was last year. I think that 15 games without Karlsson will make it really hard for Ottawa to make the playoffs. I have a feeling we'll find out either way.

10 of the Sens first 16 games are against teams that didn't make the playoffs last season. They'll be fine.
