The $30 rod worked well enough to get me interested after catching a couple white fish in idaho. I think I'll pick up a 3 or 4 wt Clearwater to take backpacking and hit some streams in the sierras.

Sweet! Now, a thousand bucks in flies and you'll be ready for anything.

Ain't that the truth. Every time I go to Montana the fly shop says they are biting on something I don't have. Going to tie a couple dozen Skwalas before next year.

There are hatch charts for all regions that will help narrow the choices down.

Here in Southern New England, we're coming into the September blue wing olive hatch and it's one of my favorite of the year. The olives are their favorite and yet, there's not so many of them on the water.

Blue wing olives are a staple in the Missouri River in Montana. Skwalas are more for the Clark and the Bitterroot in late March-mid-April. Fish a lot of Copper Johns and zebra midges too.

When are you going? Just for kicks, pick up an inexpensive fly tieing kit. You'll be tieing pheasant tails 1st day.

Argh. No. I can't start tying them too!

I don't think we can go backpacking again until end of this month. Weekends are booked with other events.e

nice! there is a lot online and youtube but I think I need to take a class as well. So far I've only been able to get some practice not the local pond trying to catch small bass and sunfish. I did get one chance to go out on the Merced near Yosemite but I need to get some waders I think... looking forward to spring when most streams here in California open up again...

Um yeah Potzer, you're gonna need waders. Ne sure to get lightweight breathable.

My buddy's been goin nutz tying flies. He's tied dozens and dozens the past few weeks and he's getting really good at it. I just tie my simple nymphs ans wets and leave the 'ole parachute BWO #18 to the pros!

that's a great starter rod. Might be a little underpowered depending on what you're fishing for in the Sierras. If it's trout you're great. Redington makes some really good equipment

Trout. 5wt seems like plenty from what I can tell. There are a lot of small streams and lakes that make a 3wt look appealing as well but that's far in the future.

I use a 5wt for nymphing and a 4wt for dries in the eastern sierras. If you're looking for a smaller rod check out a few of the fly fishing gear for sale pages on facebook. Lots of good deals. Cabelas puts their cgr glass rods on sale for dirt cheap periodically too
