One more thing re: Kontos. This move save the Giants from having to "non-tender" him in the offseason, easier to explain move now via waiver claim instead of having to explain releasing him. Just sounds better.

Gonor cleared waivers and has accepted an assignment to Sacto.

What?!? No one picked up his .163 batting average and his below average defense? Why not?
I actually think he has value as a pinch hitter. But he hasn't been able to demonstrate that this year.

I think the opposite. They tested the trade waters and let him go when they could have negotiated a trade. At least on the free agent market, he would have a choice (somewhat) on to go to. Then again, maybe he doesn't get a major league deal on the market, but I doubt that to be the case, his inherited runners mess notwithstanding.

I'm sure they had a pretty good idea of his trade market at the deadline and tried hard to move him. Figured it was best to cut bait now and save a few bucks.

Kontos was a decent Giant with some bright spots. Overall his inherited runners numbers were a hot mess. For his career with the Giants, he allowed 71/202 inherited runners to score (35%)

For comparison, when Romo wasn't closing, he allowed 51/248 (20.5%)

Gearrin has allowed 39/118 to score (33%)

JA allowed 68/232 to score (30%)

g_kontosToday is the most difficult day I've had in my professional career. The past 6 years of my life as a member of the San Francisco Giants and citizen of the community of San Francisco have been nothing short of a dream come true. It has been a privilege to play in front of some of the best fans in the game and contributing to bring 2 World Championships to the city. I want to thank the fans, the front office, the coaching and training staff and my teammates for making my time in THE BAY the best years of my life. The Bay will always be home to me wherever this game takes me; but most importantly, my heart will always bleed BLACK and ORANGE. #70

For all intents and purposes, he was a very good Giant. Great person, great back end bullpen guy in some good Giants' Pens. Not many relievers can do what Kontos did with his type of game, he was really consistent for 6 years without a big fastball or elite breaking ball.

He was mostly a positive for the Giants.

Kontos was clearly not a part of the Core Four (no matter that he considers himself part of a "Core Five"), but he was a good Giant. He should be remembered fondly and cheered during reunions.

The year he had in 2015 was great. However, unfortunately, he seemed to be on a downhill slide since then. I know that many wanted to cut bait with him last year while I argued he was still one of the best bullpen pitchers the Giants had. This year, I would have still argued that if he stranded more inherited runners. He became quite mediocre this year. Of course, with this team, that still made him one of the top three relievers before getting jettisoned.
The move is still weird to me. The team could have released Mike Morse (he's already practically retired, why waste a spot on the 40 man roster for him? They didn't do that last year for Ishikawa) and sent down Albert Suarez or Josh Osich. Oh well, this is a weird year.

I don't believe the rumors, but some say there is this thing called "baseball" and that there is a professional league set up around this sport.

Further, some say someone named "Melancon" has been activated from the DL and that someone else named "Gomez" has been placed on the DL.

Great...

Our two biggest potential off-season trade chips both go down to concussions late in the season (and both now have an establish concussion history).

And with Belt moved to the 10 day, he may be done for the season. Any chatter as to what the expectation is with Panik? I don't remember how long it took him to recover the last time he was concussed.
